Turning down Columbia for Georgetown MSB

I got off the waitlist at Columbia . I was wondering if I turned down Columbia since I already committed to Georgetown will I be fine. One of the main reasons I wanna turned down Columbia is the core curriculum and also it being far away home . Also the lack of an actual campus + school spirt . Would going to Georgetown seriously put a dent in my chances for ib/pe. I already have looked into the diversity programs at Georgetown

Georgetown punches above its weight for IB/PE recruiting. You will likely be just fine if you put in the work.

I personally wouldn't go to Georgetown MSB over Columbia. You should do what makes you happy though.

if you look more on the long term, choose columbia — the name still has more weight for whatever career you want to pursue after ib/pe

sure, but your columbia network goes a long way — you get alums from every pocket of any industries, and that'd be immense help if you ever want to pivot; not to say however georgetown network isn't strong

also, being at columbia means you are part of the ivy network — i have been to a few ivy networking events, and the people i've met there are so succesful in their fields and have been so helpful in being my mentor/introducing me to their network etc

again, not to say georgetown is not a great school, i actually liked the school's culture more, but ended choosing columbia over it because columbia's name goes further from talking to senior people in many industries (across geography too actually — columbia is more well known in asia)

since i'm also a current columbia student, i can say the core is actually fun, and there's school spirit just not the traditional let's go the football game/tailgate type of way (i remember georgetown being the same way) + i personally feel there's a campus feel at columbia, when you step on campus, you do feel like you are bit removed from the busy new york city life and enter this more quiet, homey, slow-paced environment

You’ll still break in if you put in the work either place, might be more competitive at gtown but idk their class sizes compared to Columbia. Also longer term id rather have colbumnja than gtown under my belt. Few years out of college your GPA won’t even be on resume but the Columbia name will stay. IMO there’s more Columbia alumni as well, because of MBAS. Why would anyone do an MBA at Gtown unless you’re stuck w that as your only choice ?

Probably get better looks from Columbia just due to the name , as well as close proximity to New York. Take my prospect words with a grain of salt, many from Gtown still break in, but I would’ve personally picked Columbia and not looked back .

I'd have a really tough time in your shoes too. On one hand my first instinct is to say Georgetown. I think the campus life, culture, and just every aspect of being there will be so much better than Columbia. All of my friends who went to Columbia absolutely hated it. And I wouldn't want to go to school in NY to be honest. That being said, the value of the Columbia name is huge. Some PE firms will literally only look at people with ivy league backgrounds despite them coming from top groups. If you ever want to lateral, switch careers, or switch roles then Columbia has a larger network and better recognition.

As a Hoya myself, I can assure you that the opportunities out of Georgetown are phonomenal.  I know multiple EB (Evercore, Parella, etc) and someone even got into MF PE out of undergrad. Consulting wise, MBB and LEK recruit here, but not strategy&, OW, EY-P, and ATK.  I do know people who recruited for IB and got nothing, but those students had an issue in their profile (not studying enough for technicals, no networking enough); if you are a good student in the MSB you'll be fine. The Columbia name brand is definitely better.

I am a Hoya as well. I went though their MSF program and I’m about to work in IB in a few weeks. Unsure if you’re going for a bachelors or MBA, but Georgetown name itself should help you get a few interviews in IB. Some of my colleagues got into Jefferies, Harris Williams, HL and a couple others. MBAs and undergraduates candidates got into better firms and have a better success rate. However, if Columbia does accept you I would take it.

Overall, you are not in a bad situation.
