Breaking into private equity (PE) straight from university is still relatively uncommon but is becoming more feasible as some PE firms have started creating post-undergrad programs. Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Direct from Undergrad Programs: While most PE firms traditionally recruit analysts after 2-3 years in investment banking (IB) or consulting, some firms now offer direct entry programs for undergraduates. These roles are typically more junior and involve supporting associates with tasks like financial modeling, due diligence, and research.

  2. Your Background: Starting at Warwick with an economics degree is a strong foundation. Warwick is a respected university, and your one-week PE work experience is a great start. Use this as a stepping stone to build your resume further.

  3. What You Need to Do:

    • Internships: Secure internships in investment banking, consulting, or PE during your university years. These experiences are critical for building relevant skills and demonstrating your interest in the industry.
    • Networking: Leverage alumni networks, LinkedIn, and any connections from your work experience to build relationships with professionals in the industry. Networking is key to learning about opportunities and getting referrals.
    • Skill Development: Learn financial modeling, LBOs, and other technical skills. Many PE firms expect candidates to have a strong grasp of these concepts. Consider using resources like the WSO Financial Modeling Series to get ahead.
    • Headhunters: Some PE firms use headhunters to identify candidates for direct entry roles. Research which firms are covered by which headhunters and connect with them early.
  4. Interview Prep: Be ready to articulate why you want to work in PE, what type of PE interests you (e.g., buyouts, growth equity), and demonstrate your understanding of the industry. Practice answering questions about your story, deal experience (if applicable), and even technical questions like paper LBOs.

  5. Alternative Pathways: If you don’t secure a direct PE role, consider starting in investment banking or consulting. These paths remain the most common routes into PE and will provide you with the deal experience and skills PE firms value.

Your early interest and proactive approach are great signs. Keep building your experience, skills, and network, and you'll position yourself well for opportunities in PE.
