Undergraduate business school transfer, McCombs, Cornell, Berkely, Wash U etc
Currently I am at the University of Texas McCombs school of business. I recently applied to transfer into bhp, but I was rejected. My question is do you think I should stay at UT in the regular bba program, or transfer to a different school. I am currently double majoring in Finance and Math while also minoring in Accounting. My GPA is about a 3.85 and I have taken a number of hours (33 hours freshmen year) while also being actively involved, so I should be able to transfer to a number of different schools. The careers I find most interesting are IB, trading, and consulting. With that said do you think the McCombs regular BBA program will be as competitive in placement and have as high of a quality of education as other schools? Some schools that I know have spring transfer are Wash U of st. Louis, Cornell, Northwestern (math major and finance certificate), and UC Berkely (I am also open to suggestions). Thank you for the help!
just an opinion, but I think you should stay. especially if you're receiving in state tuition.
Thank you for the response. Unfortunately I am not receiving in state tuition. If I do receive in state this year I will stay. If i don't most other school are fairly comparable in price. I do enjoy UT as a whole and love Austin, but I am under the impression due to the selectivity of jobs in IB, Consulting, and trading it would be very hard to compete with BHP students, even if I have a high GPA.
Honestly, I don't know much about the Business Honors Program, but on its face, McCombs recruits better than WUSTL, and isn't terribly far behind UCB, Northwestern, or Cornell (if at all).
I don't know why you want to transfer. Doesn't University of Texas have a pretty solid Accounting program? "Quality" of education is probably as good as most other schools. When it comes to reputable schools, there's usually a bigger difference in name recognition than quality.
Beyond that, I'd imagine that some Math and Accounting classes may be tough to smoothly transfer.
I thought from your previous topics you said that you were accepted to BHP as a freshman?
Regardless, I think McCombs is still a good option given your success there, and the general UT atmosphere compared to the other places. Also, look into FAP for next year-- it places incredibly well. It's probably more of a help than BHP alone would be. Granted, most of the kids in FAP are BHP, but I personally know some who aren't. Also, look into some of the exclusive on campus investment clubs.
@sickamore last year when i was deciding between colleges I expected I would be able to transfer into BHP (I guess I am kind of a optimist). But anyways thank you all for the help both times. And luckily last semester I was offered a invitation to join one of the exclusive on campus investment clubs.
What is this based on? Olin places 98% of its kids 3 months after graduation and has the 4th highest average starting salary among all undergrad bschools. I wont deny, though, that McCombs is perceived to be the better school, especially on various internet fora.
I admit, the statement was not based on quantitative evidence, but rather anecdotal hearsay. So yes, could be garbage. Also, I'm not sure McCombs is really perceived to be the better school (even on the internet), but I do think its recruiting is generally acknowledged to be superior.
Apparently you and I are basically twins since we share our majors down to the minor and our GPA/hour profile is so close it's silly.
I'd definitely stay in McCombs, I know of several people that were not BHP and are doing IB/S&T in NY, and a good amount that are doing IB in Houston. From what I've heard BHP gives you an advantage in getting an interview, but it seems to matter less once you have one. If you're in any of the major competitive investment orgs you'll be exposed to people that aren't in BHP and are doing well.
Feel free to PM me by the way although there's a good shot I already know you irl.
