US v. Canada best undergrad finance path?

I am a senior in hs and am trying to pick b/w business schools. I got accepted to Purdue finance (honors college), Rutgers finance (honors college), uiuc business undeclared, Waterloo AFM, mcgill bcomm. I am waiting on western Ivey, queens comm, rotman comm, Waterloo math/farm, Waterloo bba/math dual degree. The goal is to end up high finance and maybe break into IB (wall street is prolly a long shot but would be nice), and I was wondering what the best path is to get there. I am considering doing all my schooling in either Canada or the US, or going to Canada for 2 years and then transferring to a (hopefully) high tier IB target school. I have no idea of the transfer placements from Canadian schools to t20 US schools. If anyone has any advice on which options might lead to better results, please let me know. Any insight on programs at specific schools would be super helpful. I am also considering a masters if that matters for an undergrad choice. Thanks so much.

To maximize your chances of breaking into high finance or investment banking, here’s a breakdown of your options based on the most helpful WSO content:

Canada:

  1. Western Ivey (HBA):

    • Widely regarded as the best undergraduate program in Canada for finance recruitment.
    • The HBA program is case-method-based and has strong alumni connections in finance, with a significant percentage of graduates landing roles in investment banking and consulting.
    • If you’re aiming for IB, this is your top Canadian choice.
  2. Queen’s Commerce:

    • Another strong contender for finance recruitment in Canada.
    • While not as consistent as Ivey, Queen’s has a solid reputation and alumni network, especially for Bay Street (Toronto’s financial district).
    • It’s a close second to Ivey for finance roles.
  3. Waterloo (AFM or Math/Finance):

    • Best for quantitative finance roles, such as positions at hedge funds, prop trading firms (e.g., Jane Street), or quant roles in banks.
    • The Math/Finance and Laurier BBA/Waterloo Math double degree programs are particularly strong for technical finance careers.
    • However, it’s less ideal for traditional IB roles compared to Ivey or Queen’s.
  4. Rotman Commerce (University of Toronto):

    • While U of T’s MBA program is stellar, the undergrad program is not as strong for finance placements.
    • Rotman Commerce sends only a small number of graduates into IB each year, and you’ll need to rely heavily on networking.
  5. McGill BComm:

    • McGill has a good reputation but is not a top target for finance recruitment in Canada.
    • It’s better suited for general business roles or consulting rather than IB.

United States:

  1. Purdue (Finance, Honors College):

    • Purdue is not a traditional target school for IB, but the Honors College could give you an edge.
    • You’ll need to network aggressively and aim for internships early to break into high finance.
  2. Rutgers (Finance, Honors College):

    • Rutgers has decent placement in regional finance roles, especially in the New York/New Jersey area.
    • However, it’s not a strong feeder for Wall Street IB roles.
  3. UIUC (Business Undeclared):

    • UIUC has a solid business program, but it’s not a top-tier target for IB.
    • Like Purdue, you’ll need to focus on networking and internships to stand out.

Key Considerations:

  • Canada vs. US:

    • If you’re aiming for Wall Street, US schools generally have better placement opportunities. However, none of your current US options are top-tier IB targets.
    • In Canada, Ivey and Queen’s are your best bets for breaking into Bay Street, and they can also serve as stepping stones to Wall Street with the right networking and internships.
  • Transfer to a US Target School:

    • Transferring from a Canadian school to a top 20 US school is challenging and not guaranteed.
    • If you’re set on transferring, focus on excelling academically and building a strong extracurricular profile.
  • Master’s Degree:

    • If you don’t land a top IB role out of undergrad, pursuing a master’s (e.g., an MBA from a top-tier school) can help you pivot into high finance later.

Recommendation:

  • If you get into Western Ivey, it’s your best option for finance recruitment in Canada and a strong contender for Wall Street.
  • If you’re set on the US, consider transferring to a higher-tier target school after excelling at Purdue, Rutgers, or UIUC.
  • For quant finance roles, Waterloo Math/Finance or the Laurier BBA/Waterloo Math double degree are excellent choices.

Focus on networking, internships, and maintaining a high GPA regardless of where you go. Good luck!

Can you even transfer in this manner? Bad idea.

All of your canadian programs are good, Ivey being the best. If you want to/can afford the US, that is your decision to make, I'm less famuiliar with those programs.

You can't transfer in time for it to matter for recruiting. Candidly Ivey sounds better than the US schools you have listed there but be aware of the unique club recruiting dynamics in Canada.
