UT Dallas for Energy Finance
Got into MS finance in UTD, hoping to break into energy finance. How’s the program regarded in the business.

Generally speaking, your chances at breaking in are significantly better from UT Austin's MSF program. If your goal is to land a role in energy IB, it will require a lot of work (networking) even at UT Austin. Otherwise, entry-level corp finance/analyst roles should be very attainable.
Mid to top-level Houston IB will be unattainable. Even the more desirable roles at the super majors, such as trading, will be unattainable. If I were you, I would take time off and apply to UT Austin’s MSF program.
Not sure about the MS. Have worked in both roles and have never seen anyone from UTD.
I think you can get a corporate finance gig at an Exxon or a Shell from UTD though if thats what you want. The school is trying to grow, they even had a McK placement in their MBA program this year (not that I think this is realistic)
Won’t be able to get into UTA with my profile.
Have to reply like in ten days to UTD if I’ll be attending or not. I honestly don’t mind starting out in corporate finance obviously would want to shift later into ib though.
you'll have to break into IB through an MBA. The only people I have seen lateral (for the most part) into Houston IB are those with engineering backgrounds from upstream/integrated companies.
Edit: just saw you are an international student from India. Would highly recommend trying to get an MBA. the UT Dallas masters is going to be expensive, and also want you to know most of the energy companies don't sponsor international students. If you look through other threads, even MBA students are finding it difficult to land positions in IB and otherwise due to the overall drawdown on the no. of sponsored positions.
Should I hope for a job in the big 4?
Unfortunately the odds are not in your favor. I would say if you are currently a petroleum engineer and getting an MSF from the UT system might get your foot in the door. The downside of it all is that you will be going up against the keystone pipeline of UT Austin to H-town IB.
I also think your plan to work in corporate finance then go to IB is also challenging unless you pivot via MBA, at which point you'll have two masters and a mountain of debt... not ideal. I know nothing else about your situation but here is what I would do: pump the breaks on UTD MSF, try to get into MBA at Rice, A&M or UT Austin, pivot to IB.
I’m a business major (UG) from India.
Graduated like 6 months ago so not enough WE for MBA. Great scholarship so not much debt, like around 20k.
Would surely do mba in the future.
What kind of companies in corporate finance would be in my reach post UTD MSF?
