Virginia Tech Finance

Hey all,

I'm currently a high school senior that will be attending Virginia Tech next year. Would the finance program at Virginia Tech be good enough for getting me into Commercial Banking, Corporate Finance, Asset managment, etc? Or should I just take the safe route and major in accounting. My ultimate goal would be investment banking but that is simply an unrealistic expectation coming from Virginia Tech. I chose Tech because it is the cheapest in state school for me and they have stepped up their business school in recent years.

Thank you

FWIW, I know a few people at VT that are going into IB. It's a non-target so it isn't placing people lights out but it is definitely doable from there. There are some networks, I forget which banks, in New York that hire at least a few each year. Check Linkedin, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised

^ I can second this. Know plenty of kids that will be doing IB from Tech. Obviously, this required a lot of hard work through extracurriculars/networking, but it can certainly be done. PM me if you need more details.

Hey man I go to VT and am a finance major, feel free to PM me for more info or any questions. Contrast to what some might think, VT's business program has been doing very well the past few years. Of course it isn't landing people on Wall Street like a target school, but it is definitely more than doable if you have the right mindset and work ethic. We have a variety of clubs, and SEED, BASIS, and COINS are all very good for separating yourself from other students as these clubs involve heavy amounts of research into markets and equities. There are also a lot of great alumni connections that are on Wall Street. I would recommend doing finance or accounting, or even both as a dual major is very easy for those two majors. Great that you're looking for info this early too, keep looking through WSO and try to get a good GPA the first two semester to set yourself up for internship opportunities.

UVA student here...and can corroborate above^

SEED/BASIS/COINS are all great orgs that have a bunch of alums on the street.

If you can get in there, you have a solid shot at IB

Having three guys on BAML Janitorial Service in a Charlotte office does not qualify as having "alumni in IB"
