How does Southampton play in? I have York and Southampton to choose. Need some help please.

If you're including semi targets into the non-target bracket then the best non-targets are just the semi-targets...

In which case why not ask what the best semi-targets are?

Assuming you're not that silly then the best non targets excluding semis are probably Manchester, York, Leeds maybe

Degree discipline shouldn't matter but the reality is you see more placement from STEM/Econ, the less targeted a uni is. That could either be self selection bias or an actual consideration from HR.

Yeah… this one’s a strange one for me. Places pretty high in the UK rankings and above other semi targets but doesn’t get much talk, same for Lancaster.

Shows the ranks don’t mean much.

The UK rankings haven't meant much for years. Guardian 2022 - Notts is placed 52nd wtf

Lancaster just games the system. Loughborough does too but they are at least pretty decent as a university.

Think there’s broad conflation of semi-targets and non-targets here, although I agree that it’s not a well-defined separation. I would lump the universities outside the big six finance targets into the following categories:

Semi-target, public reputation as a top ten or so uni: Durham, Edinburgh, KCL, Bristol

Semi-targets, strong finance/econ or maths/engineering depts with decent effort going into alum relations, career networks, and internships/industrial placements, not as strong public reputation: Exeter, Notts, Bath, Leeds (could make a growing argument for above category)

Well-known, not actively targeted by most banks (non-targets?), but probably can break in via diversity schemes or a very strong resume: St Andrews, Manchester, York

Have absolutely no idea where to put Bayes in this, which is probably a non-target that still gives you give a chance while not being at all known outside of finance.

Yeah but St Andrews is weird in that it’s actually pretty competitive to get into. If you’re targeting finance/consulting, doesn’t make sense to go St Andrews when you can be competitive for most courses at targets with the same grades > equivalent in the US would be going to a non-target but still competitive to get in LAC over a T20. Even if you’re Scottish and get free tuition, go Edinburgh at least where there’s some finance pipeline.
