What college should I pick for engineering and finance?
Which of the following colleges has the most prestigious engineering degree and reputation in the current market? Financial aid is not an issue. I am also thinking of getting an MBA.
Carnegie Mellon
The Cooper Union
Rutgers Honors College
The College of New Jersey Honors College
Northeastern Honors College
UC-Davis
UC-San Diego
NYU
UT-Austin
CMU
Different schools vary for different types of engineering, but CMU is a good choice. UT-Austin can also be very good if you do CS (though I think CMU still trumps there) and UCSD for biomedical stuff.
Michigan
UCSD --- ahh the alma mater!!!
Carnegie Mellon -- probably best among your list for Engineering; Tepper Finance is very good (quanty though, MSCF program is something you can check out)
The Cooper Union .... Rutgers Honors College.... No. The College of New Jersey Honors College...No Northeastern Honors College.....compared to CMU, No... UC-Davis good school, but not as good as CMU; however, it definitely has more pull than CMU's Silicon Valley satellite campus in California UC-San Diego--similar to UCD, rady is new but Jacobs seems nice
NYU--NYC location, Stern for finance and Poly for Engineering, not sure about its pull outside NYC UT-Austin, good school, probably more pull in Texas, otherwise similar to UCSD
I think you have very good choices. I'd put my consideration among UCDavis, UCSD, CMU UTAustin and NYU only in those, I personally would consider a) one that gives good financial aid and b) work location.
Hands down Carnegie Mellon is your best option for both Finance and Engineering. The Tepper Business School is widely respected, and CMU's engineering department is regarded as one of the best programs (it's consistently ranked next to MIT, Columbia, and CalTech).
Your next best options are Cooper Union and NYU. However, Cooper Union's focus is on engineering. I do not think it has a reputable finance/economics department. NYU, on the other hand, is the opposite. STRONG NYU Stern program (as you may know), but it's Polytechnic School is not really considered as one of the "elite" engineering schools. In my opinion, Poly is up and coming, but I would definitely choose CMU if I were given your options and the fact that financial aid is not a problem.
Pertaining to an MBA - usually any degree + relevant corporate/intriguing experiences + GMAT + Above average GPA will help you get admitted to one of the top tier graduate MBA programs. Therefore, your undergraduate degree coming from CMU would definitely be of help.
Hope this helps and best of luck with your decision.
