Which one would look more appealing to B school?

I have an interesting situation and I would love to hear your suggestions.

I graduated from college in June 2012 (major Economics, Magna Cum Lauda), spent 2 years working as a Financial/operational analyst in a small (around 120 employee) media company. I am thinking about going back to get my MBA degree in a year or two. In the meantime, I passed CFA level 1 and is taking Level 2 in two weeks. Question, should I leave my current job and get a couple years of IB experiences or stick around for another two years at the media company? Which one would give me more chance to get into a good business school.

I have friends told me that a unique background would stand out more to the MBA admissions since they get tons of IBankers' applications. If you are selecting students, which one you would rather choose: 4 years in a non-financial firm, or 2 years of non financial firm + 2 years at a middle range Investment Bank?

Thanks and I look forward to reading your suggestions.

Adcoms love to see career progression - if you can get a job at a reputable ibank, and it comes across as advancement/improvement in your career, it could be a good idea. Alternatively, you could get the same result by being promoted at your current company or moving to a much larger media company. Probably the "safest" bet would be to move to a larger media company (showing progression, but not putting you in the competitive finance admissions bucket).

However, your post-MBA goals should also play into the decision - do you know what you plan to do?

Thank you very much for your suggestions! After business school, ideally I would love to work in a PE/HF company, however that might change depends on my experiences. The short term goal is to get into the best possible business school. Haven't really thought about the option of going to a bigger media company. Glad that you brought it up it and I will think about it. Thanks again!!!

If you want to do PE directly after an MBA, you will almost certainly need to do IB before your MBA - so I would try to make the move. If you want IB, you could wait till after MBA and still get it
