Why IU Kelley is not a "Target" School

Current Kelley student here (not in IBW, but I have friends who are) --Some kid (probably from IBW) just made a thread explaining why Kelley is a target school. This is wrong and fundamentally going to screw up some HS kid who reads, and thinks "Wow Kelley competes with the best". Kelley is awesome it's a ton of fun, I love going to IU, I love my brothers, but let's be honest here. I only came to IU because I didn't get into any of my top choices, which brings me to my first point:

1). No school with a 40% acceptance rate will ever be considered on par with a school that has a 20% acceptance rate, let alone one in the single digits that a lot of the "top targets" have.

2). IBW is great at placing people into banking, but it's not the holy grail that it is made out to be on this site. They place pretty well, but you are grinding from day 1. The Harvard kid who drunkenly stumbles into the second semester of sophomore year and says, "this banking thing could be kinda cool" will place exponentially better than the kids in IBW (let alone the ones who aren't) that have been grinding since day 1. THAT'S WHAT NON-TARGETS DO -- GRIND. I also want to point out that, to my knowledge, I don't even think everyone in my class (2021) that's in the IBW placed at a bank let alone a top BB/EB as they like to claim. I also don't think there is anything wrong with not going to a top bank, I am going to a regional boutique, but please stop trying to lie to these HS kids to make yourselves feel better.

3). Final point, to recruiters and everyone on this site, I promise not all of us at IU (or even those in the IBW) are the gigantic hardos that have been populating the site and spuing BS. Most Kelley kids are super chill and know how to have a good time.

At the end of the day, for any HS student reading this, Kelley is an awesome school, but don't buy the shit that most people on this site are selling. We don't compete with the top targets, or even the top semi-targets despite what a few IBW kids would like you to believe. If you come to IU, I can almost guarantee you'll have a good time but don't pick it over a better school because of something you read on this site.

Will you just STFU Mr. Anonymous complainer? You are no better than he was. Who gives a flying fuck if Kelley is a target or semi-target.

The point is, it provides plenty of opportunities for those that want to break into banking. Our bank, like many of our competitors, recruit through IU and are pleased with the results.

Nobody serious thinks IU is an Ivy League school. But it prepares kids better for banking.

OP here -- What am I complaining about? I get that Kelley helps kids prep for banking (I'm going into banking), not to mention the fact I said I love my school, but people on this site compare Kelley to schools its objectively not the same as. Plus if you haven't noticed a lot of HS students come on here looking for college advice, I'm just trying to give them a reasonable perspective, so no one does something stupid. Maybe next time actually read the comment before you get your panties in a bunch.

This has got to be the most uninformative post I've seen regarding IU Kelley and makes me question whether you receive any insight into what kind of kids the IBW produces. My bank also recruits at IU and are pleased with the kids coming out of it. These kids go through rigorous courses re: IB and get access to alumni network of banks and access to 5-6 TTS seminars their sophomore / junior years before they even hit the desk as interns. And while yes, IU may not recruit as well as a top target, the IBW's kids are far more prepared

Those posts are made by a bunch of anonymous, shit-posting teenagers and young twenty somethings. I hope you find happiness on Grindr.

Based on what I have read on this site. Most people here are in agreement IU Kelley isn't a top target. The most popular categorization I've seen is semi-target for IBW only. the IBW placement rate is in the 90%'s and they have a fair share of respectable placements based on what I've seen on their website. Multiple kids place at BAML, Moelis, Greenhill, PWP, HSBC, Rothschild and many others. They also send 1 to EVR, GS, MS, JPM every year relatively consistently. The IBW gets OCR from a multitude of banks and the IBW places high for Summer Internships and FT which I think constitutes it as most ppl do as a semi-target. Outside IBW it's universally seen as a non target and nobody really argues otherwise.

look at the website of placements for the ibw. there are many good but just as many bad placements, and quite a few of those kids who didn't even place at all

Thanks for being truthful. A lot of straggling people still trying to save Kelley in here.

OP here -- Don't get me wrong I think Kelley is awesome, but I just think a lot of people on here try and inflate the brand (for their ego or because of the gigantic chip that seems to be on many of their shoulders). All I'm trying to do is give kids an accurate picture of the school, and it seems like a lot of people just wanna blow smoke up their own asses. Would I go to Kelley over a lot of other state schools absolutely, but I think people are giving shitty advice to make themselves feel better, which is not the point of WSO.

Ok, so I am a HS and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go to Kelley. My GPA and SAT are more than enough to get into Ross, or any target school for that matter, however my EC's are subpar. If I go to Kelley and work as hard as a I can, is there a chance I can go to a MBA business schools">M7 when I'm 25-28? Also, if I go to a MBA business schools">M7, it doesn't matter if I went to Kelley for my undergrad or not, and I can get a top IB job, right?

You have got to be kidding me... You can go to an MBA business schools">M7 if you went to a no-name State University and got a 3.9 and ended up in a coveted position. While yes where you got to undergrad has some weight, most MBA schools care about where you worked, what you did on the job, and what you are bringing to their MBA program.

OP here -- No doubt. You can do almost anything from Kelley, but your attitude has to be to "work as hard as you can" just like you said. If you go to Kelley join the IBW and are one of the top kids in the IBW and land a job at a top bank, I definitely think you'll be fine. However, I'd encourage you to spend some time right now and volunteer virtually at charities or do something to get your ECs up so you can go somewhere where you'll have an easier time.
