Work Experience Ideas?

22yrs old, BA from a liberal arts college interested in doing MBA -> Finance.

Problem: No work experience and no connections.

I majored in German.

Any ideas for work experience to get into a top-10 MBA program?

Thanks.

Non-profits, maybe something in Germany, are probably your best bets at this point. The key thing is to keep busy and have a story that you can present to the admissions committee.

Sternfox, you have got to be the most insecure person on this board. I refuse to believe that you are an analyst at a BB as you claim, you are simply way too immature. Most people I know at BBs (especially the analyst level) are self-aware enough to realize that simply being in i-banking doesn't mean you are the shit and subsequently they aren't arrogant and juvenile. It is OK to be a HS or college student on this board, just declare it and don't try and talk about things you are hearing second-hand.

Seriously, cut this shit out.

While you aren't ruled out of the game, I think you're lacking in some fundamental areas. Work experience is very crucial, and not just any work experience. You need to go above and beyond whatever you end up doing. Also, you have a non-quantitative major. What this means is you will need to find a way to prove yourself to be analytical. Study very, very hard for the math section of the GMAT. Try to add a "WOW" factor to your resume. As mentioned above, working in Germany would be pretty unique (not to mention a ton of fun). Try to supplement your work experience with extracurriculars. Go beyond just volunteering at a shelter. Start your own shelter. These are the sort of things that will make a difference in your application.

Goodluck.

A buddy from b-school has a similar background. He did the overseas thing with a liberal arts degree and basically did embassy / chamber of commerce type work. He used his time to get to know influential people and demonstrated his intelligence and drive. When it came to writing recommendations, he had a number of high-profile, incredibly titled people willing to go out of their way and make phone calls. After b-school, he was able to convince folks that he has tons of experience interacting and advising senior government officials and that it was not an intellectual stretch to apply that experience to CEOs and CFOs. A tried and proven strategy.
