American Looking to Break into Trading in EU via Masters

Hi everyone,

I'm currently going into my last year at a T25 university in the US, studying economics, math, and data science, and am interested in moving to europe in the long-term. I have a decent CV so far, but it includes Infra PE and long-only equities, whereas I am more interested in macro-oriented asset class trading, especially commodities. One of my long-term goals, besides building a career in macro/commodities trading, is to move to Europe (preference for France or Switzerland, but fine with anywhere), and I am thinking of doing this via a masters. Also, I will have a european passport by next summer, which should make recruiting a bit easier, and I am near fluent in French (living in Paris for the rest of the year so I should become completely fluent soon).

I know that trading, especially in Macro, is more STEM background oriented, so I wanted to ask for some recommendations on programs I should apply to, as I am only really familiar with programs like HEC MiF, Bocconi Msc Finance, LSE Msc Finance, etc. which it seems are more IB/PE focused, as well as commodities specific programs like Masters in Commodity Trading at UNIGE and Shipping, Trade and Finance Msc at Bayes. Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated, thank you.

To break into trading in the EU, especially in macro or commodities trading, here are some tailored recommendations based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Commodity-Specific Programs

  • UNIGE Master of Arts in International Trading, Commodity Finance & Shipping: This program is highly specialized in commodities trading and is located in Geneva, the global hub for physical trading. It offers a unique combination of academic learning and practical experience through partnerships with the Swiss Trading and Shipping Association (STSA). Companies like Vitol, Cargill, Mercuria, and others often recruit from this program. Tuition is also very affordable (~$800/year), but you must secure an internship/apprenticeship with an STSA member to enroll.
  • Bayes (formerly Cass) MSc in Shipping, Trade, and Finance: While not as focused on physical commodities as UNIGE, this program offers a strong foundation in trade and finance, with a focus on shipping and logistics.

2. General Finance Programs with Strong Placement in Trading

  • LSE MSc Finance: Known for its strong placement in London-based trading roles, this program is a solid choice if you're targeting macro trading. It has a less academic and more practical focus compared to Oxford or Cambridge.
  • HEC Paris MSc in Finance: While traditionally more financial markets-focused, HEC has a strong reputation in Europe and offers excellent networking opportunities, including trips to London to meet with top firms.
  • Bocconi MSc in Finance: Offers a quantitative finance path and is well-regarded for its placement in both Italy and London. It’s a strong option if you’re looking for a broader finance education with trading opportunities.

3. Quantitative and STEM-Oriented Programs

Given your interest in macro trading, which often values quantitative skills, consider: - ETH Zurich MSc in Quantitative Finance: A top-tier program in Switzerland with a strong quantitative focus, ideal for trading roles. - EPFL MSc in Financial Engineering: Another Swiss program with a quantitative edge, located in Lausanne. - LSE MSc Applicable Mathematics: A great option if you want to leverage your math and data science background for trading.

4. Other Notable Programs

  • HSG St. Gallen MSc in Finance or MSc in Quantitative Economics: Located in Switzerland, this program offers strong connections to the Swiss finance industry and a quantitative focus.
  • Imperial College MSc in Finance: Offers a mix of finance and quantitative courses, with good placement in trading roles.

Key Considerations

  • Language and Networking: Your near-fluency in French and European passport will be significant advantages, especially for programs in France and Switzerland. HEC Paris and UNIGE, in particular, will benefit from your language skills.
  • Program Focus: While general finance programs like LSE and HEC are excellent, commodity-specific programs like UNIGE will give you a direct path into the trading world, especially in Geneva.
  • Quantitative Edge: Since macro trading often values STEM skills, programs like ETH Zurich or EPFL could give you a competitive edge.

Next Steps

  1. Apply to a mix of commodity-specific and general finance programs to keep your options open.
  2. Leverage your time in Paris to network with alumni from HEC, LSE, and other top programs.
  3. Focus on building your quantitative skills further, as they will be highly valued in macro trading roles.

Good luck with your journey into trading and your move to Europe!

Please, any Europeans (British included) who could help me? 🙏🏼

Bocconi has a very good rep for trading. I’d also look at some of the masters in imperial and Oxford MFE, maybe some French schools like Dauphine too If you’re fluent
