Associate Hiring

As a new board member I was hoping to get some advice on my recruiting outlook for sales and trading. I have been in the industry for ten years as a derivatives trader at the CBOE and CME (listed equity options and listed eurodollar options). However, I recently left the floor to finish up my MBA full-time at the University of Chicago's GSB. Unfortunately, due to my work status this past spring, I missed the opportunity to interview for summer associate positions. Much to my dismay, I am learning that almost all major banks fill their trading positions from the summer crop. Do you know of any banks that might have a bit more flexibility with hiring? Since most of my experience is as a proprietary, floor-based trader, I do think the formal training program and potential to rotate through different desks has merit.

I thank you all in advance.

Most banks have their first-year needs fulfilled by now, that's true. Maybe you could get hired as at a more senior level (with your background, you most probably could), in which case you might start looking at job websites (doostang is very good) and contacting headhunters. The problem with first-years is that IBs have a training program that can only accommodate so many people, and right now most of these programs are full.

I'm just curious - why did you decide to switch from derivatives trader at the largest derivatives exchanges in the country to IBanking?

A high number of summers get offers, but I dont think all of the recruiting is out of the summer class at all. Your experience on the floor will put you head and shoulders above a lot of people. Many, many of the rate traders I know used to trade on the merc.
