Associate S&T

I found great posts on the dos and don'ts for analysts, but what about Associates?

What are the key differences in expectations of analysts and associates?

What must an associate know that an analyst does not? On your desk, what are you expectations of Associate? Basically, what have you seen or made you a successful associate? A start to a dos and don'ts for Associate.

Again, great posts on preparation for new Analyst, but trying to start something for our new Associates.

runthetownsales or trading?
Trading. However I have always been told the best sales person is the best trader and the best trader is the best sales person. But again, I'm an intern this summer so what the fuck do I know?!

From my perspective, the most important difference is DO NOT treat the analysts like your underlings even though they technically are. Be humble and use them to learn. You will not trade or sell anything in the desk, whereas some of them might have been trading for over 1 or even 2 years, producing PnL (hopefully) so they know way more than you and are far more valuable and cheap than you. And it applies to everything. I would expect you to be the one getting coffee or lunch instead of me. I already do it for 42 weeks a year.

It is completely inconceivable how a summer associate could try to boss around an analyst already on the desk. Pretty sure when we had a summer associate on the desk last summer he was getting coffees and lunches for everyone, including all the analysts.

Summer Analyst Summer Associate Trader's Assistant Analyst etc.

During a summer internship, what are the key differences in expectations of analysts and associates?

What must an associate know that an analyst does not? On your desk, what are you expectations of Associate Interns? Basically, what have you seen or made you a successful associate intern? A start to a dos and don'ts for Associate Interns.

Again, great posts on preparation for new Analyst interns, but trying to start something for our new Associates.

Do you mind giving us a bit about your background?

Just a normal guy who snagged an associate internship. Networking is king and consulting blows. Why do you ask?
