I would say both. I come from a prop shop and so EMSX is our backup trading system, but we also utilize the terminals to check on the market. Endless information at your fingertips is pretty darn convenient.
If you're on the prop side, then what did you chart with?
Chart what? I was hft so there wasnt a lot of charts and crayon lines.
I only use it for research... but that's just me
It’s great having sell side research aggregated, and also IB chat is magic
It's not just for front office functions, there are operational stuff on there too for middle office, as well.
i think best research and analytics come from sell-side weekly reports. bloomberg has live news and pricing systems, which is vital. also has risk mgmt and trade booking capabilities.
almost everything on the bloomberg terminal can be found elsewhere for free or very cheap....bloomberg is almost never the lowest cost option..and many times, not the best tech option either. however, it is nice to have everything integrated into one product....you are paying for convenience...nice, but not necessary.
money.net is an example of a lower cost option that replaces bbg for many information things (not everything...but many). Tradeweb replaced bbg for an OTC trading platform. There are many chat platforms out there, etc..
Very rarely will bbg offer enough features to be worth its price, vs getting all the individual things elsewhere. However, if you don't mind paying 2k/month for convenience...there you go.
