If you're at a top shop/fund/bank you may be able to go to a lower tier place, but most people leave the industry.  Why pay more for a failed trader when you can pay a 22 year old a fraction of that and give them a shot?

Some of the people I know went back to school or did something completely different (lecturer at a university, high school math teacher, back office).  But yeah, trading has bad exits - that's just part of the deal.

If you want to exit trading, I'm sure you can leverage your technical background into software engineering.  Most people I know at prop/HFT firms are CS/Math majors, so I've seen a few become PMs or SWEs at big tech companies.  Others have moved to more engineering roles in the crypto space.  The average exit really doesn't matter because it depends on your skillset.  Personally, I have interned at a few tech companies before doing prop and am pretty sure I can go back to those firms anytime within the next 5 years.
