Fixed Income Sales Exit Opps

Anybody have any color into what exit opps are like in fixed income sales? Recent associate promote with 3 years experience. Thinking of making a move before its too late and I'm pigeonholed into one thing. Interested in buyside credit roles/REPE/ direct lending but just want to be realistic with expectations. Understand exit ops for S&T aren't as abundant as IB but still wondering.

Exit ops include fixed income sales. In all seriousness, I was on a fixed income sales seat, then transitioned to another team internally, before jumping externally to an investing role (FoF). It is possible to exit to something interesting but will require some hustle. I had looks at buyside trading, investing, and investor relations roles. My advice tho is to jump sooner than later if that’s what you want to do. If there’s not a ton of overlap with the exit, they may try to give you a haircut on seniority and pay, which will only be harder to swallow as time goes on

I think you shouldn't limit your scope to exit opps within finance.  After all, you are a salesperson and sales skills can apply to any industry and product (to a degree of course, like you probably wont jump ship to sell specialized medical devices to doctors, etc.).  But I've seen many young salespeople on traditional desks at banks jump ship to tech, start-ups, crypto, other industries, etc.  I think the crypto angle is quite interesting since it's high vol/risk at the moment and if you are young and risk-on with your career at the moment, it could be quite lucrative.  The start-up path is also quite interesting since you'd be hands-on designing and selling a new technology or product.  In any case, strictly finance-y exit opportunities are possible, but most salespeople I've seen leave have gone on to gigs outside of finance, so keep your options wide open!  And definitely be ready to hustle.
