FX OPs to trading??

Over the summer I took a Global Markets internship at a small, relatively unknown bank. It turned out my role was operations; processing and facilitating FX trades, MMs and Bonds. All of which are in the EM space. I learnt a vast amount about the EM space and just how these trades are made. I converted and stayed on, but under one circumstance. The head of my desk promised that after 18 months he would help me become a trader within this bank.

My question is, do we think he said that just to keep me on? I have spoken with a lot of the traders on the floor and most actually started in OPs where ever that may be. If I wanted to trade here or elsewhere, how long would I have until I am pigeon holed in Ops and the front office dream dies?

Any advice appreciated - Thank you.

Well, based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for individuals to transition from operations to trading roles. However, the timeline and success of such a transition can vary greatly depending on the individual, the bank, and the specific circumstances.

In your case, it seems like you have a commitment from the head of your desk to help you transition into a trading role after 18 months. That's a good sign! However, it's important to keep in mind that while promises are made, the reality can sometimes be different.

To increase your chances of making the transition, here are a few tips:

  1. Continue to learn as much as you can about trading and the EM space. The more knowledge you have, the better positioned you'll be to make the move.

  2. Network with the traders on your floor. You mentioned that many of them started in operations - they could provide valuable insights and advice.

  3. Be proactive in expressing your interest in moving to a trading role. Don't just wait for the 18 months to pass - show initiative and demonstrate your commitment to making the transition.

  4. Be patient. Transitions like these can take time, and there may be setbacks along the way. Don't get discouraged if things don't move as quickly as you'd like.

As for your question about being pigeonholed in Ops, it's hard to give a definitive timeline. However, the longer you stay in an Ops role, the more challenging it may become to transition to a front office role. That being said, it's not impossible, and there are certainly examples of individuals who have made the transition after several years in Ops.

Remember, every monkey has to start somewhere, and it sounds like you're on the right track. Keep swinging!
