Help, what to do?!

Rewind three mo's ago, and I interviewed at at BB for a TA role on it's EM/EXOTICS credit trading desk. Went up all the way to HR, then they went internal.

Fastforward to now: I got into Cornell MBA and I get a call from a recruiter saying the Bb called again specifically asking for me to interview again?

What do I do? Do I leave my current IBANK and go to the BB for a few months before Cornell? Only thing is they recruit at Cornell and would they remember that when interviewing me a year from now?

Only reason I am torn is I really want to do EM anyway and this might be a good experience.

I wouldn't go unless you plan on skipping the cornell mba.

This is just my opinion, but it would look very bad to take a job you know you'll only be in for 3 months without letting the employer know. That is definitely in bad faith.

But why not skip the cornell MBA for now. If you got in there, you should be able to get in again..or to a better school with another year or two of experience.

two things, one don't worry about 'bad faith'. you may burn a bridge if you leave after 3 months, but that's all i'd worry about.

but i'd take it, if you don't like it then no loss, and if you do, just stay and do the mba some other time.

Id be upfront with the bank. Tell them that they took very long to get back to you, and now you have to decide between an ivy mba and this job. You are completely on the fence. However, if they can do anything to sweeten the offer...

Yeah, the offer is not there just yet. But I WAS thinking of being up front and kind of asking them that if I take a TA position right now, what avenues are there to be a trader? Because that is what I would be doing the MBA for and would be what Im giving up.

As per Jimbo's point, about leaving after 3monthns, I just dont want to risk HR thinking about that when they recruit in a year on campus for a summer internship at Cornell.

you want your cake and to eat it too.

if you leave after three months, you'll have a tough time going back to that bank. the only reason to take this job is if you have a legit chance at thinking you like it and would put off the mba to work on the desk.

if you like it, you stay. if you don't who cares, and you wouldn't be trying to go back to that bank anyway.

agree with jimbo... just another thought, if you go to the bb and then leave after three months for Cornell MBA... firms interviewing you for internships next year will likely ask you why you were only at the bb for 3 months. They will also know the b-school application cycle (meaning you took the bb job knowing that you were heading to b-school anyway). Just be prepared to have an answer for this question next year.

Best of luck to you. Sounds like you have two good opportunities in front of you.

I like the way Jimbo thinks...only thing is the BB will still know, so they might be written off for me. Oh well, they might not care when they come to recruit cuz its only a TA role. I think I will just do a good job at the interview (tomorrow) and take it from there.

they will probably care...so write that bank off there are lots of others. are the other groups at the bank you'd even want?
