How are the trading opportunities in energy and what is living in Houston as a young professional like?

I'm a commodity trader with a couple years experience in soft commodities. I'm currently in the upper Midwest and it's -2F outside my office. I know Houston is a major trading hub for commodities, particularly energy. How do people feel about the trading opportunities in oil, gas, and electricity markets? Are these markets easy to transition into for an agricultural trader? And how fun is living in Houston for a mid 20s young professional?

I can't speak to the trading opportunities, although I do work in O&G finance. Moved to Houston in 2014 and bought a house here last year. There is always something to do, the restaurant scene in Houston is amazing, and people are generally very friendly. A lot of what I like about Houston has to do with living in Texas - no state income tax, nice roads, beautiful scenery (when you get out of the city that is), affordable to fly in and out for travel...etc. Definitely worth a visit for a weekend or so if you're seriously considering moving here. There's a lot to see!

I can think of a few shops that are hiring right now. If you were willing to take a step back and come in to a mid-office/risk/ops type role, I don't think you'd have a difficult time getting a foot in the door. I'm sure getting hired on as a trader on an O&G desk is possible, though I imagine you'll need to leverage existing contacts in the industry for that to work out.
