How exactly is coding (C++/Python/R/SQL) used?

Been talking to Traders and Quants alike, and it seems like programming is increasing in importance on many desks. However, I see words like 'algos' or 'coding' or 'systems' get vaguely thrown around without much actual meaning.

My question is- how is programming in Python/R/C++/VBA used? Is it used for analysis (aggregating data and coming to conclusions), is it used for execution of trades into the market, or is it used to create software that traders can use to analyze/visualize the things they're doing (so like SWE)?

It's used for all three of those. C++ most likely for the execution of trades while Python, R, and VBA are used for analyzing data, scraping data, etc.  How exactly these are used and which language gets the most emphasis will be very firm/desk dependant. I often use Python to make some ad hoc analysis but there's also an entire data pipeline that feeds us live info during trading. The organization of this data pipeline has little to do with trading and is similar to what you would see at any data science startup.
