How long for experience to be worth it?

How long to stay on sell-side before your experience is “worth it?” On a nonlinear fixed income income desk (GS/JP/MS) with a lot of turnover. I am interested in transitioning to a trading role at a hedge fund or potentially research. Also interested in quant shops, but not sure if ship has sailed there. How long to wait before applying to new roles seriously

Most hedge funds won’t even look at u until you’ve managed your own PnL. That is your track record and the only thing they can really judge you on. So I’d say at the very least 2-3 years.

What if I am not set on being in directly a trading role? Very interested in strategy or something with a better work life balance. Any recs?
