Insight on RWE Commercial Grad Program

Hi All,

I recently got offered the commercial grad role for RWE Supply and trading and wanted to find out if anyone has any insight into what is the :

1. Career progression and salary progression for the role before and after the program

2.probability of landing a trading role through this program

2. Exit opportunities (assuming no trading role, e.g. trading analyst etc)

My background is a bachelors in economics with data science major and I'm debating if I should just stick to pursuing a data science role or give commodities a try in hopes of higher future compensation.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the career progression and salary progression in roles similar to the RWE Supply and Trading Commercial Grad Program typically follow a structured path, especially in the energy and commodities trading sector. While I don't have specific details about RWE's program, here's a general outline based on industry standards:

  1. Career Progression and Salary Progression:

    • Early Career (0-2 years): Initially, as a graduate in a commercial role, you're likely to start with foundational responsibilities focusing on market analysis, supporting senior traders, and learning the trading systems and strategies. The salary at this stage is usually at an entry-level but competitive within the industry standards for graduate programs.
    • Mid-Career (2-5 years): After completing the graduate program, individuals often progress to roles with more responsibility, such as a junior trader or trading analyst, where they can start making smaller trades under supervision. The salary progression at this stage can be significant, often with a base increase and potential bonuses based on trading performance.
    • Senior Positions (5+ years): With proven success and experience, the next steps could include senior trader roles, where you're managing larger portfolios and making more significant trading decisions. At this level, compensation is highly variable and can include a substantial portion of performance-based bonuses, making the earning potential quite high.
  2. Probability of Landing a Trading Role:

    • The probability of transitioning from a commercial grad role to a trading role depends significantly on your performance during the program, your ability to grasp trading strategies, market knowledge, and the openings available within the company. Networking within the firm and expressing a clear interest in moving to a trading position can also improve your chances.
  3. Exit Opportunities:

    • If a direct path to a trading role doesn't materialize, there are still valuable exit opportunities. These can include roles such as trading analyst, risk management, or positions in market analysis. Your background in economics and data science is particularly valuable, offering a strong foundation for roles that require analytical skills, such as quantitative analysis or even transitioning into fintech or financial data analytics roles.

Given your background in economics with a data science major, venturing into commodities trading through the RWE program could offer a unique blend of applying your analytical skills in a dynamic market environment. The decision between pursuing a data science role directly or exploring commodities trading depends on your career interests, risk tolerance, and the value you place on the potential for higher future compensation in trading versus the more stable, but possibly lower, compensation trajectories in traditional data science roles.
