Irving Oil
Hi there
Does anyone work (or have worked) at Irving Oil in Saint John, NB? Interested to hear your thoughts on the company, the refinery, and associated job prospects. What is the upwards trajectory for someone there vs someone in Calgary given the same skill set which is largely supply and trading and/or corporate strategy / BD type roles. How competitive are they with pay? (I assume very competitive in Atlantic Canada but less so compared to Western Canada...especially with long term incentives).
Interested to hear if anyone is familiar with the place and possibly get an inside scoop to how progression and pay actually works
Thanks!
I interviewed with JD Irving Group Of Companies (the holding company, so not Oil) in early 2016 for the location Saint John, NB - Canada. the holding looks after all subsidiaries. Very lengthy interview process with many stages, sometimes not entirely clear how many are left: 1) screening call with talent acquisition via video-conference 2) assessments: 2.1 ) honesty/theft personality assessment test online 2.2 ) wonderlic test assessment (50 questions in 12 minutes) via video-conference 2.3 ) personality assessment (The Predictive Index) online 3 ) Interview with line manager or his/her boss 3.1 ) panel interview 4 ) on-site interview superday 4.1 ) includes real estate tour, the work shop, other facilities 5) background: financial, criminal, educational, references check (+SIN and rest) 6) drug screen 7) medical (yes, onsite doctor) 8) potentially offer ?
Never spoke to them about an offer and the salary was not disclosed; I told them during the interview process that I don't want to work for them. The company appeared (to me) very old-fashioned and rigid. Very much process-oriented and inflexible.
However career progression was discussed in meeting 1) - the first one. They said they are willing to promote within 2-3 years for that particular role. the role was corporate strategy within group/holding and would've gone from senior manager to director in that time.
I thought the managers all mentioned the positive work environment, being close to nature/resources (due to the industry they are in), and being a key employer in the area. Many employees I met spoke highly of JDI.
The region itself is a bit of an acquired taste. Beautiful, but obviously not comparable to a city or even suburban region. Very much wide, open spaces, the bay and pretty much living among beautiful parks. You have to be the type to like it there - this place has nothing to do with going out, clubs, or anything like that. Good place to raise a family/kids though. Outdoor, hiking, biking, all that stuff.
