Looking for advice, move into FT S&T role

Hi All,

Recently got laid off from FI rotational role at a well known AM in NY. Was told they didn't see the program as a value add after a year which sucked, also was looking for a more senior person to fill seat and be a credit analyst instead. My role consisted of helping traders and PM's with any tasks needed at the desk, also shadowed throughout day. Want to transition to S&T. Have prior experience as a summer analyst in a markets program (JPM/GS/MS). Also have series 7 and 66. Help would be appreciated. Finance background. Networking seems to not be going well.

Ah, the jungle of finance can be a tough one to navigate, especially when you're swinging from branch to branch looking for that perfect spot to land. Here's some advice for transitioning to a full-time S&T role:

  1. Leverage Your Experience: You've got a solid background with experience in a markets program at a top firm and a stint at an asset manager. That's a good foundation. Make sure to highlight your hands-on experience with traders and PMs, as well as any specific skills or knowledge you gained.

  2. Series 7 and 66 Licenses: These are valuable assets. They show you're serious about the industry and have a commitment to professional development. Be sure to emphasize these in conversations and on your resume.

  3. Networking: If networking isn't yielding results, it's time to switch up your strategy. Try reaching out to former colleagues, alumni from your school, or even cold emailing professionals in the field. Remember, it's not just about asking for a job; it's about building relationships. Offer value, be curious, and learn from their experiences.

  4. WSO Networking Guide: Since you're looking for some guidance, the WSO Networking Guide could be a treasure trove for you. It's packed with strategies and tips on how to effectively reach out and make connections in the industry.

  5. Stay Informed: Keep up with market trends and news. Being able to discuss current events intelligently will make you a more attractive candidate and give you more to talk about in networking conversations.

  6. Be Persistent: The finance world respects tenacity. Keep pushing, keep learning, and don't get discouraged by setbacks.

Remember, every trader loves a good comeback story. Yours is just beginning. Keep your spirits high, your bananas ripe, and your eye on the prize!
