MS London SnT Summer - Rotation Selection Guide and General Advice

Hey there,

As we're approaching the desk selection phase for this year's Summer Analyst class in London, I was wondering if you guys had any advice on how to pick the desks to rotate on.

I saw on the other thread (not allowed to attach the link) that MS LDN has an incredibly low conversion rate especially for SnT. So would want to do this strategically:

  • Personally, I've done both flow and non-linear Rates before, and would highly prefer it
  • However, MS is traditionally known to be strong in IED, should I also try to rotate here and to Structuring to maximize my chance?
  • Any other general advice? The conversion rate matters to me the most, as I'm a final-year and do not want to go through the FT job search again...

What are your thoughts on that? Thx a lot!

When it comes to desk selection for Morgan Stanley's London S&T Summer Analyst program, strategic planning is key, especially given the low conversion rates mentioned in previous discussions. Here's a guide based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Understand the Rotation Rules

  • At MS, rotational programs often require interns to be chosen by desks to secure a return offer. For example, some interns may need two desks to select them, while others might only need one. This can vary by year and program specifics, so confirm the current rules with HR.

2. Diversify Across Equities and FICC

  • Spreading your rotations across Equities and FICC (Fixed Income, Currencies, and Commodities) is a smart move. It shows versatility and allows you to explore different areas of trading. However, prioritize desks where you have a genuine interest and can demonstrate relevant skills.

3. Target High-Conversion Desks

  • Some desks may have better conversion rates than others. While this information isn't always public, try to gather insights from alumni, current analysts, or mentors who have gone through the program. Focus on desks known for strong mentorship and a history of hiring interns.

4. Leverage Networking

  • Before the rotation phase, network with professionals on the desks you're interested in. Building rapport with team members can increase your chances of being selected for rotations and ultimately securing a return offer.

5. Showcase Your Fit

  • Fit is a critical factor in S&T. Desks will evaluate whether they can see themselves working with you long-term. Be proactive, curious, and adaptable during your rotations. Demonstrate your ability to handle the fast-paced trading environment.

6. Be Strategic with Your Preferences

  • While it's tempting to aim for the most prestigious or competitive desks, balance this with practicality. Choose at least one desk where you believe you have a strong chance of standing out and making an impact.

7. Prepare for the Unexpected

  • As noted in WSO threads, MS has had instances of mismanaging headcount or making unexpected decisions. Stay flexible and focus on performing well regardless of the desk you land on.

8. Excel in Your Rotations

  • Regardless of the desk, your performance during the rotation is crucial. Be the best at even the smallest tasks, as highlighted in the WSO post about summer analysts. This attitude can leave a lasting impression and improve your chances of conversion.

By combining strategic desk selection with strong networking and performance, you can maximize your chances of success in the program. Good luck!
