Writing this post not to brag, but genuinely seeking advice. I'm a freshman at a non/semi target(mizuho and bmo recruit ocr as of this year so semi I guess?) from the east coast. I have a 3.8 GPA 2 internships in pe and currently am interning at a small boutique ib which I will continue during the summer. I have leadership positions in clubs and a strong network after making like 90-105 calls. Where do I go from here? Everyone I talk to tells me I'm ahead and that's great and all, but I want to stay ahead. I'm very interested in restructuring do I do a distressed hf internship next summer? Have a list of 200 distressed hfs to potentially email. Is middle market banking a possibility next summer? Credit funds? Where do I go from here? What would you do in my shoes? My goal is an eb or mm restructuring, but I will take whatever offer I can get. Any advice is appreciated.

Non-target junior, I interned at a distressed PE fund my sophomore summer and leveraged that for this summer at a Big 3 Restructuring Consulting firm (A&M, FTI, Alix). Not sure if this is something you've considered yet, but better to keep the net as wide as possible when looking at sophomore and junior internships. I'd be happy to potentially get you in touch with my former firm, although it's literally just 4 people in an office (small shop, great hands-on experience and you can do whatever you want as opposed to some of these other internships where all you get to do is powerpoint or something. If you're that interested, just start networking with any and all Rx firms this summer for potential sophomore summer opportunities and if/when that doesn't work out, start networking with all other firms for junior summer.

TL;DR: Keep networking, maybe more emphasis on distressed/Rx shops for now, look into consulting Rx shops too.

For your sake, I hope you genuinely enjoy this stuff and aren't just doing it for a paycheck.

I would say don't overdo it. If you want to become a multi-millionaire, you are going to have to play the long-game, and cannot afford burning out in your early twenties.

Would be a tragedy if you were one of the analysts that burns out as soon as you break into MF PE (APO people quitting after less than one year etc).

Good point I genuinely enjoy the field and the work , that’s kinda what has kept me going through all these unpaid internships and long hours. Burnout is a very real thing so I will be more conscious of that in the future.

Credit and fixed income internships can be looked at as a positive for rx
