Offer with no time off
Hey guys, I have been offered a position as a trading assistant and I am really excited about it. Its a small growing firm, however I have one question. In the offer letter there is no mention of vacation time. I don't know if they just forgot to put it in there or if I don't get time off. I don't know if I should ask about it because I don't want it to seem like I am already thinking about taking time off. I know I won't be taking a lot of time off as it is, but just curious. What do you all think I should do? thanks
Sometimes it will be in the employee handbook and not necessarily stated in the offer letter, or stated under "benefits," loosely. Did they talk about health insurance or 401k in the letter? If not, you could ask about it in a round-a-bout way by asking them what the benefits are.
I'm not 100% on this, but I believe legally you are entitled to 2 weeks off, anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much.
I think anaismalcolm's approach is a good one. You should be entitled to some minimum amount of time off as an employee of the company. The only way they could get around this is if you were classified as a "1099" -- which essentially would mean you're a contractor rather than an employee. As a 1099, you wouldn't be entitled to anything, including benefits, 401k, and time off. This is rare though and there are government regulations in place that prevent companies from classifying full time employees as 1099s. Since it is a small, growing firm, you may want to double check. If you're classified as an employee, you'll get time off even if it isn't stipulated in the offer letter.
Yeah I have full health and dental and stuff like that, so I am an employee. I agree I probably get time off, its just not stated in the letter. Thanks for your help.
If you want time off, go teach 3rd grade public school
