Please help chance a nontarget for 2025 S&T

I am from a non-target. Before you to tell me to use the search bar, I’ve been using WSO as a research extensively and know the general path given. I’m just looking for some personalized guidance. I have always been passionate about finance and have been into trading for as long as I can remember, so S&T is my #1 preference.

I have been networking since the start of the school year, but only with school alumni, business school professors that still work in the industry, and alumni of this social group.

Where I’m asking for help is:
1. How do I convert my networking relationships into getting an internship/job? I am in contact with a lot of people but not really sure how to ask for an opportunity to get an internship at a firm/get my resume passed up etc.

2. What path should I take in order to best set myself up for getting an SA opportunity in S&T? I see a lot of resources and guidance for IB on this site (and have a lot of contacts in IB of my own) but not as much S&T

2024 S&T is gonna be tough since a lot of the spots are gonna be filled. My advice, network hard for the S&T apps that are still open while also applying to other roles. Some people don’t like to swallow their ego’s, but consider doing a related field (research/risk) and then doing a lateral for your full time or a year or two into the job

You can probs just try and land an S&T role for your sophomore summer, even if it’s not at a great bank. If that doesn’t work apply to risk and research roles for sophomore year.

Doesn’t matter all too much (I landed my 2024 S&T offer at BB before I got my 2023 risk internship offer just because of how early recruiting is). So as long as you’re doing everything right for summer 2025 you should be fine.

Went from regional MM S&T soph to NY BB S&T junior year so can speak on this a bit. Most important thing as a non target is to get those senior referrals in. Talk to a lot of other non target juniors/seniors, cast a wide net. Keep your grades up. Make the music minor a big thing in your interviews. Stop mentioning you always wanted S&T since you were little (no you didn't). Start developing your story on why you truly wanted it and make it good.

Bust your ass off from now until February 2024 to land your 2024 internship so you can get it on your resume. At the same time, have at least 3-5 chats/week across all banks from multiple offices but especially NY over the next 6-8 months. By the time applications drop in Feb-April, you should have at least 3-5 direct referrals from every single BB and 1-3 from every single MM and boutique out there.

If you're good enough, you'll learn to code a macro that sends out emails for you to cut down on manual email reachout time but I'll leave that for you to figure out ;)

Not trying to bust your balls here, just genuine advice from me. Also fix your grammar because you don't sound like you grew up in the US in the first couple sentences lol
