resume writing for trading

i have a non-trading background (m&a, equity long/short) but spent 2 years or so of my career in quant prop trading and am now looking for another job. an issue i have is that i don't know what "good" resumes look like for trading roles in different seats. for long/short and M&A, I had a harvard business school resume book for similar people that i would use to model my bullet points after which was insanely helpful. i've tried to find a similar resource for trading-type roles, but all the resumes i find from googling all seem not that good. does anyone know of a good resource to study how people write resumes for this type of job? any suggestions?
what i struggle with most is deciding what to emphasize with my experience while keeping it short. i personally think seeing what other people write to be helpful because it helps me decide what to emphasize.

Ah, the art of resume writing! It's all about showcasing your skills and experiences in the best light. For trading roles, you want to highlight your quantitative skills, ability to make quick decisions, and knowledge of financial markets.

Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, here are some tips:

  1. Quantitative Skills: Highlight any experience you have with quantitative analysis. This could be from your time in quant prop trading or any relevant coursework.

  2. Quick Decision Making: Trading often involves making quick decisions under pressure. If you have any experiences that demonstrate this skill, be sure to include them.

  3. Knowledge of Financial Markets: Any knowledge or experience you have with financial markets will be beneficial in a trading role. This could be from your time in M&A or equity long/short.

  4. Relevant Experience: Highlight your experience in quant prop trading. Be sure to include any specific achievements or successes you had in this role.

  5. Keep it Short and Sweet: Trading resumes should be concise and to the point. Avoid any unnecessary information and focus on what's most important.

As for resources, the WSO Resume Review service could be a great help. They offer detailed bullet edits and a proven process to help you land more interviews.

Remember, every trader's path is unique, so don't be afraid to highlight your unique experiences and skills. Good luck!

Probably from a more grad/early career perspective but I think the Princeton Master of Finance resume book can be a good reference (easy to find pdf online). Their cohort prefers students with quant/prop trading experience during admissions and lots of these candidates went on to work full time in these jobs as well. You can see how they formalize the bullet points around an experience as quant trading intern at D.E. Shaw/2 sig/Jump, for example. Another similar one will probably be resume books from other MFE programs but their students might have relatively less experience before joining the program (considering the difference selectiveness).
