Risk Analytics at Oil Major

Hello. I am new here and am looking for some advice from people in the commodity trading industry. I just landed an off cycle internship in Risk Analytics for a oil major.

The job description says that I will be assessing the overall hedging strategy and commercial margin along with optimization of their trading and arbitrage plays (Asset Backed Trading).

Any idea on what will the day to day activities look like? Also can someone tell me what does such a position involve and will this experience be looked upon favorably when I try and switch to trading? People have told me that the trading role is becoming more and more merged with Risk Management where as a trader you are increasingly trying to manage the risk of your portfolio.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

This is a good start, you will most likely do ad-hoc analysis, help provide daily PnL reports, and hedge valuation (shadow calculations), you may also help shadow forecast gross margin as it pertains to energy margin for the assets and the hedges (gain/loss). You'll probably run analysis on how 'hedged' you were during a certain period, and what could have gone differently given the position entering the month (term) and your cash (intra) month hedges.

Short answer, look at if you made more money when you thought you were going to make less, why? If you lost money when you thought you were going to make it, why?

This is an absolute shot in the dark based on one sentence, but if i had to guess, this is what it would be.

Not at Houston. It's outside US actually. But would you have an idea on what can day to day activities look like? Also how will it look when i try for trading roles after this internship?
