S&T related first year summer internship (hopefully to break into S&T)

Hi, I'm a first year student doing econ related subject at Warwick.

I am currently doing a search fund internship, and I was looking to apply for summer internships (note, this is the first summer, not the one with structured BB internships)

Since I decided I don't want to do IB, I was looking into getting some experience or something decently related to S&T.

I have some experience trading index futures (/ES) using orderflow and the book but nothing fancy, all manual execution.

The thing is, I have not heard of small trading firms or boutiques apart from the known quant ones (SIG, jane street and the likes, for which you cant be a first year and have to obviously be a genius quant)

i'm looking for some Advice on this, how should I approach getting a small internship? I was thinking cold emailing some personalized emails, leveraging my search fund internship and trading and targeting Asset managers>Equity research> Any market research related> lastly boutique IB advisory.

Any tips would be gladly appreciated as I'm a little tooo lost.

Thanks in Advance!

Ahoy there, future S&T star from Warwick! You're already on a great voyage with your econ studies and search fund internship. Now, let's chart a course for that S&T summer experience.

Here are some bananas... I mean tips, to help you navigate the waters:

  1. Leverage Your Current Experience: Your search fund internship and index futures trading are golden nuggets. Highlight these experiences in your applications and conversations to show you've got skin in the game.

  2. Research and Identify Targets: Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate! Look beyond the big names. Smaller firms might not have the same brand recognition but can offer valuable experience. Use platforms like LinkedIn to find smaller trading firms, asset managers, and boutique advisory firms.

  3. Craft Your Approach: Personalized emails are the way to go. Make sure each email is tailored to the firm and the person you're reaching out to. Show genuine interest in what they do and how your skills and interests align with their work.

  4. Network, Network, Network: Attend industry events, join finance clubs at Warwick, and connect with alumni who are in the field. A personal referral can sometimes be the key to unlocking opportunities.

  5. Prepare Your Pitch: Be ready to talk about your passion for S&T, your experience with order flow and book trading, and how you can contribute to a firm. Keep it concise and compelling.

  6. Follow Up: Don't be discouraged if you don't hear back immediately. Follow up with a polite email or call. Persistence can pay off.

  7. Be Open to Learning: Show that you're eager to learn and adapt. S&T is a fast-paced world, and showing that you're not just knowledgeable but also a quick learner can be a big plus.

  8. Consider Related Fields: Equity research and market research are good stepping stones. They can provide you with a solid understanding of the markets, which is invaluable in S&T.

Remember, the sea may be rough, but it's the challenging voyages that yield the most treasure. Keep your compass pointed towards your goals, and don't be afraid to navigate uncharted waters. Good luck, and may the trade winds be in your favor!
