SWE Intern to S&T

Incoming SWE at a top BB (think GS/MS/JPM) starting a placement year this summer.

Longer term I’m not fully sold on pure SWE - I’m increasingly interested in Sales & Trading. Something more markets focused.

My placement year ends at the start of 2027 summer, so I can do a summer internship as well straight after.

Internally at the same bank - how do should I signal interest in S&T to HR?

If targeting S&T internships for 2027, how should I position my profile coming from a tech role?

To transition from a SWE role to S&T within the same bank, here’s how you can strategically position yourself:

  1. Signal Interest to HR Internally:

    • Start by networking within the S&T division. Use your placement year to connect with people in S&T through coffee chats, informational interviews, or internal networking events.
    • Express your interest in S&T to your manager or mentor during performance reviews or informal discussions. They can often help facilitate introductions or guide you on internal mobility.
    • When the time is right, reach out to HR and clearly articulate your interest in S&T. Highlight how your technical skills can add value to the division, especially in areas like electronic trading, algorithmic strategies, or data analytics.
  2. Positioning Your Profile for S&T Internships:

    • Leverage Your Tech Skills: Emphasize how your SWE background equips you with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis, programming, and problem-solving. These are highly valued in S&T, particularly in roles like quant trading or electronic sales.
    • Learn Markets Fundamentals: Start self-studying key S&T concepts such as market structure, trading strategies, and financial instruments. This will help you speak the language of the desk and demonstrate genuine interest.
    • Highlight Transferable Skills: Showcase skills like teamwork, adaptability, and attention to detail, which are critical in both SWE and S&T roles.
    • Gain Relevant Experience: If possible, work on projects during your SWE placement that intersect with trading or markets (e.g., building trading platforms, working on data pipelines for trading desks). This will make your transition more seamless.
  3. Networking and Preparation:

    • Attend internal events or training sessions related to S&T to build relationships and gain insights into the division.
    • Prepare for S&T interviews by practicing market-related technical questions, behavioral questions, and understanding the hiring process (e.g., who makes the decisions, as mentioned in WSO threads).

By combining your technical expertise with a demonstrated interest in markets, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for S&T internships.

You will have the pedigree, you just need to convince HR you are interested in markets. Got as close as you can to the market division on your placement year (if possible) and do some markets-oriented side projects to show interest, like a markets newsletter.

Remember that S&T summer 2027 applications will open in September/October ish time (about 6 months) and if you start placement in June you won't have tons of time to build these things up so best start now.

How do I hint HR about an internal move to a trading/markets role for the following summer without making it seem that I don't like the current role
