Feasibility of going from MBA into a trading career?
I have a real interest in trading that I’d like to explore. I find it extremely interesting and often come up with trades in my head that I’d like to have made - but I have a non quantitative degree (Law) and I feel like I need my mba to transition into trading.
How feasible is this?
Definitely doable. I have seen people do it but it is rare.
Would you recommend something over the MBA?
MBAs are useless in trading. Go for financial engineering, stats, or MSF instead
How come the MBA is worthless for trading? Could you not get financial engineering / stats in the course of the MBA?
Sure, you can do an MBA where 20% of the classes you take are directly relevant to trading (almost all of which are electives) or you can do a specialized masters where 80-100% of the classes you take are directly relevant. Additionally, MBAs are seen as a bit of a joke to traders, particularly on the more quantitative desks. MBA is a more common path for IB, consulting, etc. but most trading desks will not recruit from MBA programs. For masters programs recruiting, have seen MFE at Columbia and Princeton place quite well and some specialized programs at Chicago, CMU, etc.
