Trading to management?

Former CEO of Lehman Brothers, Dick Fuld, started out in the bullpen, yet, a quick search of WSO would suggest that trading hierarchy is unapologetically flat. How does one go from trading to managing traders and reaching the upper levels of a company?

it is not even remotely common, and not something you should plan on. you are much more likely to start a successful hedge fund than become a c level exec at a bank.

From looking at some of the people on my bank's floor, I think it might go something like MD-->Head of Desk (So head of Rates trading or something)-->Head of US Division (eg: Head of US Fixed Income trading)--> Head of Global Division-->Some sort of upper level management position close to the CEO(such as COO or vice pres or whatever)-->CEO. Just my guess though

It's a tough climb, but so is every c-suite job in a bank. VP -> MD -> Head of region for that asset class -> Global Head of Asset class -> Head of S&T division of said bank (gives a position in the leadership group) -> Some kind of C-suite job (Might skip this step) -> CEO

Hell, in my bank there are guys making more money in the salesforce or as a trader than everyone above them.
