UK: Swithcherooni into Sales and Trading from Engineering, LSE Finance

Hello everyone,

I hold a Bachelors in Engineering, Masters in Engineering (first class), and currently doing my part-time MSc in Finance at LSE, while working as a full-time Project Manager in Investment Advisory for an engineering consulting firm. I would like to transition into any sales, trading, proprietary trading firms (I don't mind starting from a grad role as I am still young 26 y.o). As an International Student, currently working with a skilled worker visa, how likely am I to land a finance job and get sponsored? (I cannot really aim for internships in the UK, as my visa status does not allow it, I can only go for full time grad schemes). Any advice is appreicate, anything I should focus on, any certifications etc? Also to mention that I have an internship from KPMG in tax and legal, and an internship from a quantitative trading firm.

To transition into Sales and Trading (S&T) from your engineering background, while leveraging your MSc in Finance at LSE, here’s what you should focus on:

  1. Highlight Transferable Skills: Your engineering and project management background can be a strong asset. Emphasize skills like quantitative analysis, problem-solving, and technical expertise, which are highly valued in S&T roles.

  2. Networking: Since you’re targeting full-time graduate schemes, networking is crucial. Reach out to alumni from LSE who are in S&T roles, attend finance-related events, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the field. Informational interviews can help you understand the nuances of the industry and potentially secure referrals.

  3. Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like the CFA Level 1 or Financial Edge’s micro-degree programs (e.g., Portfolio Manager). These can demonstrate your commitment to finance and enhance your technical knowledge.

  4. Tailor Your Applications: Ensure your CV and cover letter are tailored to highlight your finance-related experiences, such as your internships at KPMG and the quantitative trading firm. Showcase your understanding of financial markets and your motivation for S&T.

  5. Technical Preparation: Be prepared for technical interviews by brushing up on financial concepts, market trends, and trading strategies. Practice mental math, probability, and brainteasers, as these are often part of S&T assessments.

  6. Visa Sponsorship: Many large banks and trading firms in the UK sponsor skilled worker visas for graduate roles. Focus on applying to firms with a history of sponsoring international candidates. These include major investment banks (e.g., Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan) and proprietary trading firms.

  7. Timing and Deadlines: Graduate scheme applications in the UK typically open in the summer and close by early autumn. Be proactive and apply as early as possible to maximize your chances.

  8. Leverage LSE’s Resources: Utilize LSE’s career services, attend employer presentations, and participate in finance-related societies to gain insights and connections.

By focusing on these areas, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for S&T roles despite your non-traditional background.
