US / UK / HK Interview Difficulty vs Canada

Was at a Big5 bank in SnT last summer and will be joining a different Big5 bank summer 2025 (Junior Year Summer).

Hoping to get the full-time offer there but interested in moving to US/UK soon after graduating.

Wondering if there is a significant difference in difficulty or if anyone has experiencing making this move. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Canada to the US, UK, or HK in finance roles does come with notable differences in interview difficulty and challenges:

  1. US Interviews:

    • US interviews are often more competitive due to the sheer volume of candidates and the emphasis on both technical and behavioral skills.
    • For Canadians, cross-border logistics can be a hurdle. You'll likely face multiple stages: recruiter pre-screens (to assess work eligibility and motivation), phone interviews, technical/modeling tests, and final in-person rounds. Networking is critical, as many roles aren't posted publicly. Leveraging alumni or personal connections is key.
  2. UK Interviews:

    • UK interviews can be slightly less intense than the US but still rigorous. They often emphasize deal experience and specific industry knowledge.
    • Language skills and cultural fit are important, especially for roles requiring fluency in a second language (e.g., German for certain funds). Networking and having a strong CV with relevant deal experience are crucial.
  3. HK Interviews:

    • HK interviews are unique due to the importance of local language fluency (Mandarin or Cantonese) and cultural fit.
    • The market is increasingly competitive, with local candidates often having an edge. For non-locals, demonstrating strong execution and sourcing skills, along with cultural adaptability, is essential.
  4. Canada vs. International:

    • Canadian interviews, especially at Big 5 banks, are generally less intense compared to the US or UK. The deal sizes and volume in Canada are smaller, and the market is less saturated with candidates.
    • Moving internationally post-graduation will require extra effort in networking, showcasing technical skills, and proving you can compete at a "US/UK caliber."

Advice for Your Move: - Focus on securing a full-time offer at your Big 5 bank and gaining as much deal experience as possible. - Start networking early with professionals in the US/UK markets. Use LinkedIn, alumni networks, and informational interviews to build connections. - Consider making trips to NYC or London for networking events or coffee chats to show initiative. - Be prepared for the logistical challenges of cross-border interviews and ensure your technical and behavioral skills are polished.
