What do Sales Interns do in S&T?

Hey guys, upcoming FI S&T SA here. Really interested in the sales side of the business and know how a FT salesperson's day would look, but what about interns? What types of work/projects would I be doing on the desk to help out? Any info on this would be appreicated

Sales interns in S&T typically have a different experience compared to full-time salespeople due to restrictions on client interactions and trading activities. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you can expect as a sales intern:

  1. Shadowing and Observing: A significant portion of your time will be spent shadowing salespeople and traders on the desk. This allows you to understand their day-to-day activities, such as pitching ideas, building client relationships, and responding to client inquiries.

  2. Market Research and Following Products: Interns are often encouraged to follow the markets for the products they are interested in. This helps you develop a deeper understanding of the desk's focus and prepares you to ask insightful questions.

  3. Asking Questions and Networking: Building relationships with the team is crucial. Asking good questions about the desk's products, strategies, and the broader market can help you stand out. Additionally, networking across different desks can give you a better sense of the culture and opportunities.

  4. Administrative and Support Tasks: While you won’t be directly involved in client interactions or trading, you may assist with tasks like preparing reports, organizing data, or helping with presentations. These tasks are often designed to support the desk's operations.

  5. Proactive Contributions: Taking initiative is highly valued. For example, if you notice something that could make the desk's work easier—like organizing data or creating a useful tool—doing so unprompted can earn you "brownie points."

  6. Learning and Trade Pitches: Some desks may assign specific intern projects, such as preparing trade pitches. This is an opportunity to showcase your understanding of the market and your ability to think strategically.

  7. Positive Attitude and Interest: Maintaining a positive attitude, showing genuine interest in the work, and being eager to learn are key to making a good impression.

Remember, the goal as an intern is to absorb as much knowledge as possible, build relationships, and demonstrate your potential value to the team. Good luck with your internship!
