Working for 1 Year vs Master's
Hi everyone, I've been struggling with this decision lately. I interned in a s&t role at a bank this summer, and got a return offer. However, it will probably not be on a desk that is very technical or quantitative in nature, which was something that I was looking for. The people there are lovely though.
So, I was thinking of working for a year and then do a master's in a STEM field, or just do the master's next year and start looking for more quant internships for next summer. I got advice in support of both sides, with some saying that taking the job would hurt me since it's orthogonal to my long-term career aspirations, and others saying it's good to get some job experience now and get a better idea of the finance world in general. The idea of a safety net/having a job is comforting but I also want to push myself at the same time.
Just wondering if people have any advice?
How did you market yourself during your internship in terms of what role you would fit in? Did you mainly make connections w quant teams? How do you know you probably won’t get a quant position?
I did a year in the industry before heading back to the masters and I appreciate it greatly. There are several people nowadays given the job market who are going right from undergrad to masters and having 1 YoE gives a bit of an edge.
