B-School to VC/HF (w/IBD and w/o IBD)
Hi, I wanted to ask about going into a VC or a HF from B-school with and without IBD experience. My original plan was to do 2 years IBD, go to B-school, and do VC/HF. However, after realizing that other finance options might be more fitting (ex. capital markets, investment management), the two questions I have are:
Are there good chances of going into a VC/HF from B-school by using the career changer card, with pre-MBA finance options (those mentioned above that aren't IBD)?
Would doing IBD compared to the other options pre-MBA give a huge advantage when it comes to first year recruiting for VC/HF?
When VC/HF folks are flipping through resumes, they do not have time for a close read of each candidate. They look for brand names, usually BBs, because interviewing candidates that have already gone through the selection process at a large bank serves as a de facto filter.
Front office work is harder to get into than other types of work in finance, and the (resasonable) assumption is that the candidates that were hired to do such work are, on average, superior to the average candidate who was not. Obviously there are tons of exceptions, but if a profit driven bank is willing to vouch for candidates (by hiring them), why not take advantage?
Well both of the other two options I listed (capital markets, IM) are also front office. So I guess to re-state my question, would someone who did let's say J.P. Morgan IBD 2 years have a significantly better shot of breaking into a VC/HF for their 1st year MBA internship over someone who did J.P. Morgan Asset Management or Capital Markets?
As a current MBA with IB experience, I would recommend doing IBD 2 years, VC/PE for 2 years then B school then VC internship. It is very, very difficult to get into VC/PE without pre-MBA experience.
