I think that's more reasonable than you might think considering you're starting so early. I work as a bank teller part-time during university and I have repeatedly been offered to be referred to the internal internship programs. Granted, we don't have IB, but I have had the option to intern in a pretty hands-on environment where I could work with risk, credit, etc. I work at a very small commercial bank, and this is likely quite different for a larger bank. With that said, developing any sort of presence and genuine referral internally very well could give you a leg up in IBD apps.
You should try to find other internships once you graduate and move to the US. No point staying as a bank teller and trying to internally transfer if you can just intern at another role.
Yes you can definitely do this plan. Just don’t expect the teller thing to be “transferrable” skill-set when recruiting for IB, you’ll need to lean on other stuff you pickup outside of that obviously.
Source: I was a teller all through CAD University and am now in IB.
I don’t know if it would be transferrable experience but something I would definitely do if you were a teller. Go into the org chart and download the contact information for all the investment bankers, and their hiring managers/ group heads. (Do spot checking against LinkedIn profiles)
Bam
Now you have contact information for networking emails and org charts to understand how coverage and product teams are structured

The thing is I can't get an unpaid internship in Canada for the summer after hs because it's illegal.
bit late but regardless of if you decide to work as a teller or not you can absolutley do unpaid internships in canada
id say >90% of the kids recruiting into ib in canada do some sort of unpaid internship such as a search fund
