M&T - Growth Equity Funds....
Hey guys. Great site, helped a ton, and decided I should probably add what I have picked up over the past 2 years. But first, I am going to go selfish and ask a question that hopefully will help me. I had planned on staying to finish my 3rd year, but during the recent "layoffs" my mentor and senior associate that I really looked up to got let go. I no longer feel like this is the place for me, so I am planning on leaving to pursue P.E. this summer. I realize it is late for most of the buyout shops, but luckily I am more interested in Growth, or later stage VC. I also know even for that, I am getting a very late start. Geographically am open to anywhere in the U.S. Can you guys help me with giving me a few names of quality firms that you know of that:
-Focus is M&T
->400 but 2billion
-Really interested (and have good experience) in communications (Wireless, RLECs, CLEC) and new media (search, social networking, etc)
-Something along the lines of a TA, but I want to be a transactional associate, not a salesman.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Cheers.
Clever user name by the way. Reminds me of my lonely nights in the office browsing craigs list personal adds (jk)
There are actually quite alot of interesting Late VC / Growth Equity that are in this space. I actually started at one, and all of the ones I will list are good shops in my opinion.
--Clarity Partners: L.A. Based Fund. They do alot of telecom stuff and the guys love it there and usually have good exit opportunities if they decide to leave. Have done Woosh Wireless, Oxygen Media, PrimeCo (before it got bought), Villiage Roadshow Production.
--Charles River Ventures
--Shamrock Holdings: Disney's fund. Pretty rigorous interview process includes weekend case study and 3 rounds of interviews.
--Providence Equity Partners: RI and NY offices. Did the MGM deal and have looked at tons of deals in the space. Larger, well-known. Actually just heard they were still looking for one '08 associate.
--M/C Venture Partners: ~$600mm. Own MetroPCS, Legendary Pictures, Revol. I believe they spun out of TA similar to other funds in the space. Due to their small size, I do not believe they use headhunters for recruiting. From what I know, I believe they usually fill their associate spots directly from TMT groups at Morgan Stanley and CS.
--Veronis Suhler Stevenson. Well known media franchise.
--Columbia Capital: ~600mm. They seem to co-invest alot with M/C and others. Based in Virgina. Well regarded within the space. XM, MetroPCS, Cyren Call, Nextel, Optasite.
--Hate to drop the name, but Elevation Partners may be worth a look. Bono aside, they have good people over there.
Anyone else?? PM me if you have any specific questions.
ColCap actually has AUM of $2billion
Yeah they have AUM of $2bn. But I listed current fund size (which is most relevant to an upcoming associate)
