Top VC Firm?

Hello all! I am a freshman at a non-target in the Midwest (if you didnt know) and I am really interested in VC work, I want to make that my future, I understand though that typically you need to have been through IBD TMT and I am also willing to do that.

My question is, is that this coming summer I secured a VC internship at a small shop in SF, and I got another one ( MD of VC is pres of this Start up) at the same time at a Media Start up, would I be able to leverage this into a TOP VC firm my sophomore year? Or do TOP VC's not give undergrads internships? Also I was thinking of applying to summer programs my sophomore year or going to a TOP VC firm which do you guys think is better?

Thanks

Internships are very rare in the VC world, they are usually only through a connection. Might be one in a thousand chance a top shop as an intern, but again is usually through a connection (son of friend of GP, or son of LP, etc). I think you need to spend some more time looking at how to break into VC, tmt ibanking is only a fraction of the industry ( I know bc I am one of the few bankers in VC), the rest are ex start-up guys, consultants/corp dev/corp vc backgrounds.

I would say get some experience that will make you valuable to port companies (start-up internship sounds great) and try to leverage that into a full-time start-up job and then you will be positioned for VC (maybe - it is a brutal industry to break into).

I see thanks would the VC internship help as well I am guessing? Also I want to be more on the finance heavy side of the VC, and I still like M&A type work.

You sir are 100% correct about the connections part thats how I got the small VC, and Start up I know the MD. I am hoping he has contacts to help me grow, but I will see my connection that is a MD worked for GS TMT in SF , and he left to work at yahoo Corp Dev, and left that to start his own company ( which was like a Big Hit) I can tell you the company if you pm me and now he left that to start his VC and another start up.

Thanks again for the help!

Haha I would love either one, but from what I have read its impossible to get an internship at anyone shops, unless I start my own startup, or do TMT, or Corp DEV. But landing an internship at one of these shops is hard as fuck. I need to be better at the only thing I am good at: networking.

The VC internship will def help, but it will still be very difficult to break in, especially out of school.... top tier VC's rarely have interns and or analysts....sometimes 1 or 2 analysts - that are usually cream of the crop with interesting backgrounds combined with LP/GP etc connections. Not to say it is impossible, but very difficult

Ohh shit lol,, Thanks Jimmy. Is it easier to break in a top VC after the IBD analyst stint? Or do all TMT kids want to go to VC? Like I said I know that startup is prolly the easiest way to join the VC background but I am more interested in joining a VC the IBD/ER route.

Thanks again all I appreciate it.

Again, the IBD > VC route is not as common as you would expect ( that is my background but most other people in top tier (as am I) VC have different backgrounds. IBD is a great place to start for any career, but if your goal is VC you might want to consider corp dev, start-up, etc. as well as IBD
