Am I a bad person?

This sophomore emailed me asking if I could talk to him and help him out, so being the good person that I am, agreed to help him out.

The conversation started out normal- interview process, technical questions, work life, etc. Then he said he wanted to work at GS so I asked him why he preferred GS over other firms and he responded 'because theyre the most prestigious and everyone knows their name' ...I thought this was the dumbest answer possible. It went downhill from there and it was starting to kind of piss me off. He said things like 'Im going to become friends with my MD so he doesnt make me stay late' and 'I know the financial statements in and out so if they ask me about anything I'll know the answer'. Then he told me that he had a 3.4 gpa but was going to put a 3.9 on his resume because thats what he got this past quarter... and asked if the background check people would find out.

I told him he should do that and that I wished I had thought of that brilliant plan when I was applying to places.

HAHAHA, leaping over the line of ethicly questionable behavior are we? But in all reality that kid has a few things to learn about life in general from the sounds of that conversation. I would do the decent thing and shoot him an email and make sure he knows you were being "sarcastic." That will still make him feel like an ass if he didnt realize it and you still did the "decent" thing.

MO come on I expected better of you..haha. But in all honestly that is funny, and doing what heiser said is probably a good idea also tell him to come on WSO and ask the community that question

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

You should give him the contact info of a secretary and tell him to ask her for a job.

Yeah I wouldn't feel bad at all.......Sounds like a douche lol. "because everybody knows them" wow what an answer.

You give me a gift? *BAM* Thank you note! You invite me somewhere? *POW* RSVP! You do me a favor? *WHAM* Favor returned! Do not test my politeness.

Anybody dumb enough to give an answer like that truly deserves what's coming to them.

Actually, maybe you should have referred him to Scrier Funds instead. Everyone knows their name, too.

on one hand this is true.. but on the other this kid is the product of many others like sofib who decided its okay to misguide him.

if u wanna be a good guy give him the hard love.. but its not necessarily ur responsibility so no ure not a 'bad person' per se.

Come on, it's bad enough the kid is a GS prestige whore-- if that was the only bad part of the convo, I hardly think Modus would've said what he told the kid.

The kid took a perfectly good networking opportunity and ruined it by 1. wanting to "become friends" with his MD to work fewer hours (lack of work ethic) 2. thinking he knows everything about financial statements (arrogant know-it-all)

His willingness to admit to someone (in the industry, mind you) about his plan regarding the GPA on his resume shows his lack of maturity, judgment, and foresight.

In sum, he's the kid nobody wants on their deal team.

I don't judge Modus for letting the kid think the GPA issue is actually okay.

should have given him more advice. like how he should send goldman a creative, colorful resume with his photograph.

Come on man, if hes gonna waste his time giving out tips on how to craft ones resume you gotta do it right. Tell him to make a rap video about his "acheivements" and have copious amounts of white poweder laying around. Also stress that this must be in VCR format.

as much as i would LOVE to see a rap video resume with fake yayo and scantily clad fat bitches, you've gotta keep fake advice subtle and believable.

HAHAHAHA good- I just needed some reassurance that my answer was acceptable.

Looking back, I wish I said something like 'Here's the recruiter at Goldman's phone number, tell her that you're friends with Jeff Chiang and that he personally recommended you call'

If your comming here for ethicly objectionable responses to your actions you are in the wrong place. Sure we all may sound nice and ethical but deep down inside we smile and laugh histericly at others failures.

Amazing! It's almost English!

Technically you are a bad person, but it's funny enough that God will understand.

That was bad of you because he came asking you for help. When he started pissing you off, you should have ended the conversation and told him that you were not going to help him.
