Back office BB vs boutique front
If my goal is to eventually land a PE/HF/VC gig (after an MBA), which of the 2 is better (in terms of exit ops and transferable skills):
1) Analyst at top BB firm doing operations/BO work (reconciling, settlement, P&I, 3rd party clearing, etc)
2) Analyst at boutique investment bank (on-site due diligence, modeling (the financial kind), working with deal structuring team, etc)
obviously there are a lot of other factors, but overall, which of these would lead to better b-school and pe/hf prospects??
Take the boutique, no question.
Very obviously the boutique. How is that not clear?
Is this even a question? Until more recently, BO ops gigs rarely required a college degree...
Definitely the boutique my man
Just to expand on what has been said so far, you'll find once you actually get into the industry that a BB name doesn't carry you far if you are in BO. The average joe probably can't tell the difference but industry guys know that BO gigs anywhere aren't very good. A boutique can actually be a great experience as a young guy because there are usually very few analysts at small shops so you basically end up doing all of the grunt work for the firm, and get way more responsibility than you would at a BB. The only catch is you have to try and get into a boutique with good deal flow and momentum.
modeling (the financial kind),
lol.
If not for the quotes, I'd have been completely confused.
And btw OP, of course you should take the boutique. Is this even an issue?
Someone mentioned deal flow; even if there was weak deal flow, wouldn't you still choose the boutique over the BB BO?
Please take the BO role... Why, you ask?

You must be new here...
Regional Boutique IB or MO/BO at BB? (Originally Posted: 09/30/2014)
Hi all,
I am a freshly minted MSF from a good semi-target school (i.e. Nova, Vandy), and am trying to get into IBD eventually. Currently in a VC internship that has opened some doors, but not quite where I want. It has bought me some time and is good for networking.
I am thinking about my next steps. Small lower MM M&A boutiques have shown an interest in me, and BB recruiters for PWM, Operations, etc. have shown interest, too. BB FO is out for now (I am being realistic).
Strategically, which offers more exit opportunities? BB back office would get me a foot in the door, but I would have much more IB exposure (albeit small deals) in a shop of 10 people. Neither is in NYC, and I'd like to go there eventually. I'm confident my network could get me to NYC either way, so geography is not a concern right now (I think). Any thoughts on the pros/cons of each? My main focus is getting useful experience under my belt now.
Thanks from a long-time reader.
I would not do BB BO unless this was your last resort.
That's what I thought. Would probably be better to jump to a BB once I have a little more experience.
This shit again?
How "regional" are we talking about here?
BB Ops vs Boutique IB - Choosing between an M&A internship (Originally Posted: 09/01/2010)
Hi friends,
I have to choose between an M&A internship at a boutique and a 6 month contract role in Ops at a BB. No-brainer right ? Actually my situation is slightly complicated. As an international student I am authorized to work in the States for only 1 year. Then someone will have to sponsor my Visa.
The Ops position is a 6 month contract role at BofA ( got through a recruitment consultant) which has a potential extension opportunity. Who knows BofA might offer me permanent employment. I would like to work in the States atleast 2 years so that I can easily pay back my loan. Plus the BofA brand name might help. Then I could go for an MBA and try entering IB. Need your views on this approach.
The M & A internship is at Euroconsult, a boutique bank with very less chance of a full time offer; as they might not want to sponsor Visa. I got this internship opportunity after networking my ass off and this could open the doors of an IB career for me. But I am not sure if I would be able to leverage this to a full time offer elsewhere.
I am confused right now. Please advice.
You networked your ass off for that spot and, by the tone of your post, its obvious that's the spot you would prefer. Take that spot and make it your bitch. Worry about the visa when the time comes, I think you're putting the cart in front of the horse. If you give that boutique spot everything you have and continue to network and get your name out there, you should be fine when the time comes.
lots of bedbugs in ny. not worth imo.
BB Ops vs Boutique IB - Offer for a 3 month internship (Originally Posted: 01/09/2011)
Hi all,
I might have an offer for a 3 month internship at a boutique M & A firm ( If I follow up more and show interest). However I am already working full-time in the Ops division at a BB. I need work Visa within 3 months so I would prefer staying with the BB as of now. What should my strategy be so that I can push the IB internship to a later date; or even have them offer me full- time instead?
Thanks!
