Best Netflix Originals
Just like the title says, what do you believe are top Netflix originals. I'm currently watching Sense8 and quite enjoying it. I've also seen House of Cards as well. Looking for more recommendations.
Shows I've watched:
Stranger Things
Sense8
Narcos(season 1)
The Get Down (Both seasons)
House of Cards(All seasons)
The Crown
Daredevil (Caught up)
Jessica Jones (Caught up)
Iron Fist
Luke Cage
Lovesick (Season 1)
Marco Polo (Both seasons)
Black Mirror, hands down.
Stranger Things and Narcos top it for me. Daredevil was pretty good too. I find House of Cards goes downhill every season along with Spacey's terrible accent.
I enjoyed Narcos season 1, but haven't gotten a chance to watch season 2. Stranger things I really enjoyed and I am waiting for season 2.
Bloodline
I watched the first episode, but it just didn't interest me. Does it get better? If so, I'll give it another chance.
First Season is awesome, Ben Mendelsohn is superb.
Yes. I tried starting it several times and it never took. Push through the first episode and a half, and you'll be stuck. It takes a while to develop. But worth it.
Peaky Blinders is alright as well.
Best show ever
Frontier - highly underrated and underwatched.
In a loosely ranked order: Black Mirror, Stranger Things, House of Cards, Bloodline, Narcos, Bojack Horseman.
Most unique: Black Mirror (personal favorite) Most under-the-radar: Bloodline Best all-around: Stranger Things (I think all audiences of appropriate ages can jump into this one and really enjoy it) Guilty pleasure: Bojack Horseman (honorable mention to 13 Reasons Why; started that with girlfriend and will admit I was intrigued to keep watching and find out out how things unfolded)
RX I was interested in Bloodline but it seems to be just another family drama. Is it worth it? Whats unique about it?
Bloodline season 1 was awesome but I couldn’t make it more than a couple episodes into season 2. I still think season 1 is worth watching if you treat it like a miniseries and pretend it ends after season 1.
Totally under the radar: The OA
Just start and it will suck you in.
Great until they do all that weird dancing.
Agree that Bloodline is way under the rater too.
Haha. I enjoyed the OA but the climax was quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen on television.
Not an original but Netflix now produces it. Lovesick on Netflix is an awesome show.
House of Cards really isn't on the level that people put it. Its first season was ok, but it has gotten progressively worse with each step of the way.
Peaky Blinders is a lot of fun. Stranger Things is awesome. The OA starts incredibly strong but has an unfortunate season ending. Black Mirror will mindfuck you. The Crown is fantastic. Narcos is fantastic also.
Peaky Blinders is amazing. Also a fan of Jessica Jones and Marco Polo.
1.) House of Cards (honestly it is trailing off, its first two seasons were its best) 2.) Narcos 3.) Stranger Things 4.) Orange is the new black (surprised no one has mentioned this) 5.) Daredevil 6.) Jessica Jones 7.) Master of None 8.) Bloodline 9.) The Get Down 10.) F is For Family
I have not seen The Crown, Black Mirror, BoJack Horseman, Love, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt which I hear is good, and Sense8. I left out the co-productions like Peaky Blinders (BBC), The Last Kingdom (BBC), Frontier (Discovery Canada), and Travelers. Santa Clarita Diet, Luke Cage, & Marco Polo are fun shows but do not belong in the top 10.
I enjoyed Marco Polo but its canceled AFAIK.
Unbreakable Kimmy for Season 1 was very unique / new spin on humor.
Master of none = awesome
Also really enjoyed Luke Cage / The Get Down's use of hiphop/rap throughout the series
The Crown is a fantastic show.
Black Mirror (the Christmas special is insane).
Stranger Things
Bojack Horseman - way more than another trashy animated comedy, push through the first few episodes and it is just next level.
I'll buy you a beer if you can watch more than 2 episodes of Black Mirror consecutively.
Also, Chef's Table is also great if you appreciate fine dining and salivating over meals you'll probably never have.
House of Cards - seasons 1 and 2 were great, season 3 sucked and season 4 got a little better. Stranger Things is great. I hope they can keep it up for season 2. I think they already have a season 3 signed as well. Medici: Masters of Florence season 1 is awesome if you can get over the casting of Dustin Hoffman.
Sounds like I need to check out Black Mirror
Bro gotta watch Trailer Park Boys and People Just Do Nothing, both shows are dum fire
Anyone heard of anything about "3%"?
I did! - It is insanely good.
It does get a little boring towards the end, but nonetheless an excellent show, especially for people who speak Portuguese.
Black Mirror is absolutely insane, haven't watched all of it (about half the episodes), but "Shut Up and Dance" is hands down my favorite. White Christmas is a really really close second.
Stranger Things is also pretty good, watching 13 Reasons Why now but it's really not that great.
Not sure if this counts, but Arrested Development is great, only the last season is a "Netflix Original" though.
House of cards, frontier- highly underrated but worth watching.
i am fan of Iron Fist
i think netflix is awesome channel
It's really under-the-radar, but I really liked Merli. I also have a guilty pleasure for Love because of its awkward humor.
I've never heard of Merli, but I'll look into it. I definitely agree with your reasoning for the show "Love". Gus makes me cringe a little inside every time he talks to women.
House of Cards (all seasons to date), Bloodline (all seasons to date), Crown (all seasons to date)
To a lesser extent: Bojack Horseman, Master of None, Black Mirror, Daredevil
Stranger Things A Series of Unfortunate Events - Loved these books as a kid Arrested Development Season 4 was not as good as the rest but still enjoyable Not ashamed to admit I like Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman Girlfriends Day
Heyy Black Mirrors bro!!
Stranger things and Narcos
Mindhunter is based on a true story (and book) about two FBI agents who get inside serial killers' minds. Happened in the late 1970's. Oscar-nominated director. It's a little slow at first but really interesting.
Netflix Cutting the Cord (Originally Posted: 02/05/2013)
I'm obsessed with Netflix. Not the stock, but the product itself. Frankly I find myself throwing it on even in the background sometimes while doing random work on weekends or something like that, just for noise that is different than music. Saw this gem in the FT ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/8b30b562-6bbe-11e2-a17d-00144feab49a.html#axzz2JTQfR960"> today regarding Netflix.
So we've watched the music industry, publishing industry, newspaper industry all have the middle man slapped around like a donkey; is it finally time for the television industry to undergo the same? Yes, I understand that instant streaming and availability has been around for awhile now but realistically people still have one or two options at best for cable and then a bevy of channels for x amount per month. Does the ability of a company like Netflix suddenly change the way shows are funded and produced? I doubt it very much, but really I'm not all that convinced that we won't soon be seeing more individualized subscription services to channels more granular than we already have.
How do you guys feel about the future of content providers juxtaposed against cable companies? Do you see them combining even further to the point where the content providers actually own the delivery system for content? Could the content creators, providers and delivery systems all become one?
Comcast (Kablevision) began the vertical integration when they bought NBC. I believe that this trend will continue and in the future all TV will be delivered over IP by streaming in one way or another. The hardware is already moving in that direction as well.
Definitely an interesting change to see Netflix doing this as well.
You mean Kabletown. Valiant attempt, though.
I cancelled my cable service just yesterday because Netflix carried all the content I cared about. Local channels are already coming across the wire/air and everything else is wrapped up for $8/month.
I feel the same way as TechBanking: I think we're going to see a lot more content provided through IP as content-makers get into the business of delivering that content on their own, or by linking up with a service like Netflix for (I'm assuming) a lower cost as compared to various cable companies.
The wife and I decided that when the kid is born we're cutting cable. There's going to be a lot less sitting around after work and more focus on what's on at 2am.
I'm going with an antenna, Netflix and Hulu Plus (probably). That with a slightly faster internet speed should work perfectly for us.
Thankfully, I have a friend who will log in to the Watch ESPN app for me to use.
Can't decide on whether or not to get cable once I graduate and move into my apartment for FT (cable is included in my rent right now). Leaning towards no - especially if I can continue to use my parents' Comcast info to get into WatchESPN. I have Netflix and Hulu Plus right now and like them both a lot. House of Cards is fantastic as well.
I've been debating cutting the cord for a while now. I'm basically paying ~$100/month so that I can watch ESPN and HBO and I rarely watch any other channels which is ridiculous. I'd estimate that 95% of what I watch is through Netflix (just started House of Cards last night, and thought the first two episodes were excellent) for $8/month.
I'd happily pay $5-10/month per channel that I want to watch (as I do with HBO) and forgo the rest, but I can't see the monopoly that is the cable industry letting me do that anytime soon. IMO, if everyone could piecemeal their TV plans, then cable providers would take an absolute beating, as most people only seem to watch 5-10 channels of the 200+ they pay for, me included.
I don't have cable. Only netflix
I'd cut the cord but I got a stupid good deal which makes expanded basic+internet 5$ more than just internet. I will probably do it when the promotion is over though.
No question in my mind that we won't have cable television soon, but that doesn't box out the subscription television providers.
The fact is that cable / satellite is very shortly no longer going to be the best way to broadcast television. Internet infrastructure is cheaper to maintain and consolidates the amount of infrastructure that has to be in place to continue television service.
There's still a demand for live television, but how quickly and in what manner does cable television shift to internet distribution? Do all the networks set up their own streaming service through their websites, or do companies like Comcast and DirecTV simply shift their methods of broadcast to internet streaming rather than cable / satellite signals?
Pretty much all modern TVs come standard with internet connectivity and "Smart TV" features. To the extent you have an older TV, you can use products like Roku and Apple TV as TV box replacements. This is the revolution that Apple has been trying to bank on with Apple TV, but they are sadly not the only player in this fight. How long till Netflix joins the "Smart TV box" market?
I personally wouldn't be surprised to see Google win this battle. They appear a few steps ahead of everyone in this game, from where I sit. They launched their Gigabit project in Kansas City, they've been pushing Roku and expanding Google TV. These guys understand something: the solution to television in the near future is internet distribution, which demands a solid "Smart TV box" (to replace your cable box) and improved internet speeds (to make certain you don't have to deal with buffering live TV).
Also worth noting, I think, that although the discussion in this thread is centered around cable subscription and cutting out the distribution channels run by Comcast, Time Warner, etc., the suggestion of the OP's post is that Netflix would be performing the role of production financing, which I find unlikely.
It's interesting: when you mention the music industry here, I assumed you're talking about cutting out radio? Because although the record labels have certainly lost profit from the elimination of CDs, they are still pretty vital to music distribution as marketers of the "stars".
More importantly, while music and writing are extremely cheap to produce, television/film isn't so. It costs millions to produce a TV series, and thousands to record an album and it's essentially free to publish digital articles. We're talking about different scales here.
.
If you haven't found ways to get those shows online, you aren't looking hard enough...
AAPL is reportedly in talks to bring HBO GO to Apple TV. I could see something interesting developing if they 1) decided to put some of that $137B of cash to good use and buy Netflix and then 2) release an iTV that offers a Netflix/HBO GO combo. Food for thought.
The only problem being that Google's Roku already has both HBO Go and Netflix.
Cobra Kai is hilarious on Netflix
I was glad they added it. Rip Miyagi
