Blackberry for interns?
Curious if banks give out BBs to interns still. I've noticed there's an app that some banks have that lets you use your current phone and merge it into a personal and work phone, but not sure if that choice is given to interns.
You'll be given a Blackberry. Most banks won't go through the hassle of setting up Good for interns. It's better to keep personal and work phones separate anyways.
It probably varies by bank, but when I was an intern, most just got the app you reference (it's called the "Good" app). People that did not have a smart phone were given Blackberries, however.
We had the option of using either Good or getting a blackberry. Definitely get the blackberry if you have a choice.
what's a blackberry ?
I used the Good app last summer, but the Blackberry def would've been the way to go. That app is shit.
sorry to revive an old thread...but I heard JPM is done with issuing BBs, can anyone confirm this??

Hi,
Do summers get a blackberry or are they expected to come in with a smartphone? Same for summer analysts and associates?
Thanks.
I would like to know the answer to this question as well!

Now I can say you can go do some research next time you have a question
blackfinancier wins again
Yes, you will get a blackberry (no idea why you'd want one) and you will not be allowed to use your smart phone. Remember this is all privileged communication.
If you are S&T you might not get one, but IBD for sure. And yes they do suck, dont wish for one
well god damnit that's gonna suck
Thanks- yes, will use the search function next time.
usually, they're pretty crappy blackberries too.
not necessarily but be happy if not.
Necessity of Blackberry for SA? Provided at BB? (Originally Posted: 02/13/2010)
how necessary is a blackberry for a SA position? could i expect one to be provided/included for SA at a lower tier BB? is it worth subscribing to a data plan for a few months?
thanks.
Not necessary -- you'll likely spend most of your waking hours in the office anyways. Most banks also offer a way to check your email off the network (i.e. you can check it from a home computer), and will want you to check every couple of hours when you're not in the office (weekend afternoons, if you're not already there).
Though, from what I've heard, some BBs do give out a data Blackberry to each of its summers... I know my bank doesn't, but some do. If they don't, I wouldn't bother getting one just for the job -- only do it if you want a Blackberry for personal reasons.
I think most places do give you a blackberry. Me and all my friends had it for our SAs.
All BB's give out blackberries, even lower BB's like DB/UBS/WF.
They Give You Everything. Don't worry.
Summer Analyst Blackberry Use (Originally Posted: 03/25/2016)
As a Sales and Trading Summer Analyst at a Top BB Firm ( New York) , will I receive a company issued Blackberry?
It's probable, and no, you don't want it...
Most likely not. It's not like banking where your boss will call you into the office on the weekends or late at night. You'll be working market hours +2-3 before and 2 after.
You will not.
UBS - Do SA get blackberrys? (Originally Posted: 03/24/2007)
Does UBS do the normal meal allowance and black car service? I heard that the bill is on the employees and they are reimbursed after a month or so. Also, do the summer analysts get a blackberry?
From what I know, summer analysts at UBS do not receive blackberries.
get $25 a night for meals, cabs/black car service if u work after 9pm and on weekends...no crackberries (be thankful for that)
yeah, you get reimbursed for food expenses
Isn't it more difficult without a blackberry? Normally they call you in if something urgent needs to be done. Wouldn't you have to just live at the office 24/7 so you don't miss anything that needs to be done? I know you're there most of the time anyways, but even more so without a Blackberry.
short answer- you will be in the office more w/out a bberry.
few threads on this, search for more info.
Do SAs get blackberries? (Originally Posted: 02/08/2008)
yes or no?
How else would they chain you to work when your outside of the office...?
I think most banks will. Both banks I have worked at gave the Summers a blackberry. But they usually were the Full times old ones....
Not at my bank. SAs did not get a blackberry.
Not surprising though - what a pain in the ass to transfer a plan and number for 2-3 months.
nice. i was going to buy one, but it i guess i'll hold off.
any real banks. and no, it's not nice. you will fucking hate that thing. haha
Will s&t or other divisions get it?
But surely they expect you to return the blackberry after your stint or is it yours to keep?
The dingle is cool until your boss wakes you up at 3 am and you start having having false vibrating sensations in your pocket and you see the blinking red light of a missed call/message. I'm with Nietzsche...F technology
For about a day. Then you realize that every time that red light goes off, something's wrong and it's probably your job to fix it.
I was able to argue my need for a blackberry and they gave me a Curve for the summer. Only data, though -- no voice plan.
I hope only IBD has to get it?
i dont see why the s&t kids would get one. not much going on after everybody leaves the desk..
How else would I chain summer interns to their desks and make them do all my work?
Not sure about S&T, don't think there's too much of a need.
And yes, the Blackberry is cool for about a day until you start waking up to vibrations from emails sent in Dubai in the middle of the night and having nightmares about the flashing red light.
Unfortunately, even more jobs outside banking are starting to use the Blackberry... fun times.
I really hope S&T summers dont get one. Ill probably lose it.
I hope you guys don't get one
I'm pretty sure all corp fin analysts do
S&T dependss on the firm
and yes you return it
The BB is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I have nervous ticks where I constantly check it. I am always "on" - god help me.
go chelsea.
didn't get one last summer at a bb. was a blessing. you don't really want one - people will call if they need you.
i just got into a habit of coming into the office on the weekends at 1130am and then talking to my teams. was able to get anything done that needed to be done.
believe me, you don't want one. everytime i feel that buzzing in my pocket, i die a little inside. with the blackberry, the fun truly does never end...
only redeemable feature is brickbreaker, which is addictive and has nearly caused fistfights over high scores in my group....
I'm still in school and I saw my buddy who sat next to me in accounting yesterday get all the way to level 34 on brickbreaker, in class. And then he kept going... was I easily impressed?
X3,
Getting to level 34 isnt that impressive...but getting to level 34 on the third time through is. Each time you beat the game you start at level 1 and begin again. I will have to say that the hardest level of brickbreaker is the "U" Thoughts?
Do IBD SAs get blackberries? (Originally Posted: 03/03/2009)
If so, are they allowed to use them for personal calls / texting?
I'm mainly wondering because I will be in HK this summer, and want to know if I need to figure out an independent cell phone solution for myself while I am there.
What do HK SAs usually do in terms of getting mobile service for their personal needs?
I worked in a smaller office, made my case to head of the office and got the Curve last summer. No voice, only data.
You get a blackberry with internet and email access only, no voice option for SAs. You may think it's cool to have one at first, but believe me you will get sick of it buzzing at you in the middle of the night.
The world has changed. And we must change with it.
The SAs at my bank did, and the cool factor wanes quickly.
You will cringe when that red light appears, and your Crackberry vibrates. I will say that I did have separation anxiety when I had to give it back at the end of the summer.
cutting expenses - this yr, you will be given a walkie talkie...so don't stray too far from the office. good luck
lol... i heard SA's dont. And if you do, it's used.
As for phones, just unlock your cell phone (if you're AT&T its free) before you go and buy the prepaid chips. They're pretty cheap. Something like 7hkd cents / minute? I forget.
yes, and you better leave that bitch on LOUD when you leave the office
ibhopeful- does the unlocking thing work for un-jailbroken iPhone 3Gs? Will AT&T do it for me if I take my phone in?
I didn't get one last summer.
Summer Analysts - Blackberrys? (Originally Posted: 03/06/2007)
Do summer analysts get blackberrys? I'd rather not have one, but I've heard horror stories of interns getting shackled to them.
I know GS and Lehman summers get them.. Not sure about the others.
That's interesting that Lehman summers get them since I've always heard of them as a very cost conscious firm.
Does every division get them or just front office?
omg! summer analysts get blackberrys???!!! I hope you guys are joking!
Most summer analysts get blackberrys at BBs. The only banks that don't give them that I know are UBS, CS and DB. This is a debated topic on this forum (there are other threads about it) but I think they make ur life much easier.
every intern or just ibanking interns?
