CapIQ question
Does anybody know if there is a capiq formula for automatically looking up the CIQ ID by referencing the company name?
How to Use Capital IQ to Look Up Company ID
S&P Capital IQ is a powerful tool for market data, especially when used with its Excel plugin. When looking for a formula, you can try their handy formula cheat sheet or ping other users here on WSO. Community members provide these tips for how to look up CIQ ID by referencing the company name.
From WSO user @hcanalyst13" :
=CIQRANGEA(A1,"IQ_COMPANY_ID_QUICK_MATCH",1,1,,,,,"QUICK MATCH COMPANY ID")
This range formula will populate the cell to the right of it with the first returned CapIQ ID of the searched cell (so you can search by company name). Always a good idea to check the IQ_COMPANY_NAME to make sure you grabbed the correct CIQ ID.
From WSO user @spstack0507" :
- Go to the S&P Capital IQ tab at the top of the screen and open up the "Templates" tab under the "Data" category.
- Go to SPCIQ Excel Plug-In Tools and open the SPCIQ Identifier Converter.
- This should help explain the ID conversion process.
From Certified Corporate Development Professional – Director @jackofalltrades" :
If you're doing a big screening, bring in the Excel ID in when you export in the first place. If you get in the zone you can go through a 200-name list in no time. Quickest manual way (excel 2007):
- Set up a blank column to the right of the column with all the company names
- Ctrl+C company name
- Right arrow to blank cell
- Click the button on the keyboard that brings up the mouse right-click menu
- I, Enter
- Ctrl+V, Enter
- Keep pressing tab until the search results show up, then tab to the correct name
- Spacebar (to highlight the name)
- Alt+O to insert the ID
- Right arrow + Down arrow to next Company and repeat from step 2...

Use the excel add in. I don't know how to do it in the program itself
I dont think there is.
Just use the ID look-up in excel, if you right click a cell you can select to search for an ID by company. Or if ur in a company profile in Capital IQ on the internet, the address has the Company ID # in it, just add an IQ in front.
Easiest way (If you're doing a big screening or something) is to bring in the Excel ID in when you export in the first place.
Other than that, it's a bitch to do. Thankfully, with practice you can go through many names very quickly via keyboard-only shortcuts. I.e., hands off the mouse!
Quickest manual way (excel 2007):
If you get in the zone you can go through a 200-name list in no time.
Oh yeah, forgot about that.... you can use the CapIQ web site to input all the companies you want into a list, then edit display columns and add Excel ID, then export that to Excel and copy the Excel ID columns over. Also, so long as they are public companies, you can use their tickers.
Isn't there an option with the add-in where you can search the correct =ciq formula? Pretty sure that's what I used to find formulas - then just reference the ticker/id#.
This is way after the question, but if anyone's interested or gets this in a google search this range formula will populate the cell to the right of it with the first returned CapIQ ID of the searched cell (so you can search by company name). Always a good idea to check the IQ_COMPANY_NAME to make sure you grabbed the correct CIQ ID.
=CIQRANGEA(A1,"IQ_COMPANY_ID_QUICK_MATCH",1,1,,,,,"QUICK MATCH COMPANY ID")
just call them, my first year I called multiple times a month
