All of Ares PE investment professionals are based in LA, so it doesn't make sense that 'your friend' received a PE NYC offer there as the user above pointed out.

Not to take over the thread but I’m in a similar spot. Got NYC offers for LGP, Ares, Genstar, and Golden Gate. Would like some advice on what to go for.

Insight is no longer just "venture"; in fact that word got dropped from its brand. It's still very tech and growth-oriented, but its last fund was ~$10bn, and I know there are some very profitable software assets in it.  I personally would take Insight over the other 2.  Carlyle PE makes me yawn and Ares NYC is all private credit or RE.
