Choosing: Accenture/Dean/Deloitte

I have offers from the strategy practices of Accenture and Deloitte as well as an offer from a small boutique called Dean & Co. All of them are located in DC. I am trying to choose between the three companies and I'd like to hear people's perceptions of the firms and exit-ops (business school).
Thanks.

At this point go for culture.

Dean recruited at my school (I'm in the ACC) and they seemed like cool people. I think the only thing that really separates Deloitte/Accenture from a boutique like Dean is how many people have heard of the former versus the latter.

Given the chance, I'd rather go for a firm that was strictly strat consulting instead of an IT or Accting firm that has a strat practice on the side.

Thanks for the feedback. I am certainly leaning toward Dean for the reasons you mentioned.

My next question is, there is a 13% difference in the compensation packages, in favor of ACN. As an analyst, how do I approach a negotiation conversation?

This one is really not as hard as you're making it out to be. I'm assuming you're one of the lucky few who got an offer for Accenture strategy. This is not the same as Accenture's outsourcing and technology practices. It's an eltie team of about 500 in the US and many clients prefer this business unit to McKinsey and Bain because they partner in the implementation process. There were a about 2000 who applied for that and they'll be offering the position only to only 13 at the most. I've never even heard of Dean and I happen to know that Deloitte recruited hundreds this year. Accenture is also the most global opportunity out of the three. If you're after prestige, I hope that puts things into perspective. My contacts at Accenture love their work, they're traveling every week and making $78,000 in their first year. Not bad for consulting.

If you're wanting to sit in a federal office for three years, Deloitte is probably the best bet, otherwise, from a position of reputation, selectivity and compensation, I would take Accenture.

I have to disagree with boutiquebank4life here. When you're comparing the top consulting firms like the ones we're discussing, ALL are top notch. They all offer similar services and recruit from top schools. I know Accenture strategy only recruits from Duke, Georgetown, Northwestern, Berkeley, etc. In the tone of this conversation you could argue that these schools are not Harvard, Yale, Princeton (MBB) but they're ALL still incredible schools. Perfect analogy. Also, remember that everything we're mentioning here is a matter of opinion. If you're relying on the 80 anonymous users who ranked firms on glassdoor, I think you ought to consider some other sources. Talk to the clients who use these firms. On the note of Accenture, I don't work there so I recommend you find out this for yourself. I can tell you that my friend who is an Exec at Kaiser Permanente and my contacts in management at Microsoft swear by the work Accenture does. The few people I know there seem happy and well compensated.

On your other offers, I've never heard of Dean before so I can't help you there. Sounds small and intimate. Might be harder to leverage this to get international opportunities or advance to a top business program but there are advantages to being in a small firm. Deloitte, I don't know much, just that they are really doing a lot of federal work now. If that's your cup of tea, go for it. I would personally go with Accenture given the choices.

intj and ac11-

I worked at Dean for a couple of years; am currently in b-school at HWS. It's a good place to start your career, I think--from what I can tell, compared with classmates who went to bigger firms, you get more responsibility more quickly, and it's a fun group of people to hang out with. Feel free to send me a PM--given the size, I can't really reveal that much on a public website, since it's not that hard to figure out who I am.

I have seen the following:

-78K at Accenture? What are we factoring in here? Per Diem, signing bonus? Makes no sense. ACN is 60-70 entry level.

-68K plus 10 K bonus at ACN which is 15K better than Deloitte? What? Deloitte's offer I hear was standard 65K a year plus 10-12K bonus.

-Accenture Strategy? Partnering with implementation? Lets think about this for a second. Implementation sounds a lot like software or process management. An MBB recommendation does not really require "implementation". Sounds like you'll be doing a lot what all other Big 4 Style/IBM Strategy does.

-Not everyone can be a strategy consultant. You failed. Embrace it and get ready for IT.
